Daily egg for fussy cocker spaniel

Lotty32 · 06/08/2021 08:57

My 10 year old cocker is a very fussy eater - have changed his food a few times with no luck. He gobbles the dried food down super quick if I add a raw egg. I know eggs are good for their coats - is it a mistake to give him one daily? Thx

I don't think it's an issue at all. We used to give our old boy eggs often, including the shell. Our new girl can't stomach them.
Tinned sardines are amazingly good for them too. We limit to once a week though. He might like them? Or a blop of Greek yogurt? Sometimes my dog's breakfast looks better than mine Grin

It wouldn't worry me at all. They're one of the few "complete" foods out there - it contains all the nutrients necessary to make an entire chick, and sustain it for the first couple of days of life!

If your dog was a bit chunky (or wanted to make custard!) you could always remove the yolk which is where most of the fat is, but it doesn't sound like that's an issue.

DinosaurDiana · 06/08/2021 09:32

Can you make it half an egg if you’re concerned ?

countrygirl99 · 06/08/2021 13:22

Mine have been having a daily egg for years. The only problem is the accusing looks if the hens are off lay and they don't get one.

icedcoffees · 06/08/2021 16:24

It's absolutely fine! Eggs are great for dogs, they can even eat the shells.

Aria20 · 06/08/2021 18:23

@icedcoffees wait so they can just eat a raw cracked egg and it's shell and it won't make them sick? Salmonella risk? Mine liked a bit of scrambled egg or omelette if we are having that but it never occurred to me to just give an egg as it is?

Some vets thing eggs should be cooked, but I feed mine raw eggs (not all the time, but occasionally) and it's been fine.

I suppose it's a risk/benefit thing.

Chasingsquirrels · 06/08/2021 18:30

My cocker gets to lick it up if one gets dropped (rarely) and if he is ill I'll give him one and its an easy eat.
I wouldn't have any concerns about giving him one daily, other than weight issues - but you can adjust other food intake if necessary.

In fact that a great idea if my current hens ever go into full egg production.

Chasingsquirrels · 06/08/2021 18:32

The other thing I have done when he went off dry kibble for a time (I think when he was teething) was to add some hot water and leave it for 30 mins. The kibble all softens and a bit of gravy forms.

Iggyplop · 06/08/2021 18:37

I give mine one a week and his coat is really glossy, he loves the egg but then again he loves everything.I can honestly say there is nowt wrong with the lads appetite 😂

RandomMess · 06/08/2021 18:44

Dog is playing you, the egg is an added bonus 😂 he'll eat the dry without if you persist.

Eggs laid in the UK nowadays are much safer than they were in the 80s and even vulnerable groups are now told they can eat raw ones, so your dog should be fine

The litmus test for me is always "is it any worse than what he scavenges in the park", and the answer is almost always no

Yep, I figure a raw egg must be better for him than the various types poo or dead animal he finds in the woods Grin

actiongirl1978 · 06/08/2021 19:32

I give my labs raw eggs, tinned fish (in brine not tomato sauce) and their biggest treat is being given the 1kg total Greek yoghurt pot to lick clean

Aria20 · 06/08/2021 20:36

@actiongirl1978 haha my dog loves my lactose free yoghurt pots - I'm lactose intolerant and she gets an upset tummy if she has too much dairy so we are made for each other lol

Chasingsquirrels · 06/08/2021 20:53

Oh mine loves the yoghurt or cream pot

@Chasingsquirrels I love that photo!

Floralnomad · 06/08/2021 21:16

Mine shares my yoghurt every morning and has eggs about 3 times per week . Have you tried the small applaws tins @Lotty32 , my dog is very fussy and applaws is the only food he will always eat .

Lotty32 · 06/08/2021 22:12

Thx all - DH think I spoil him!! Dog not the DH!
