Difficult dog

Hi, please can I have some help. I picked my dog up from holiday care last week and it’s still playing on my mind. She’s a 9 almost 10 month cockerpoo. Anyway when I picked her up, the feedback was brutal. She’s never known a dog like her. She wouldn’t relax in the evening, the other dogs would settle on their mats but she wanted to play, would take things out of the dog play box. On a walk, she would recall but would be the one to push it, go further than the others. She’d take stuff. She’d chew up leads in the dog walking van. She jumps up. Obviously she isn’t welcome there again! I have taken her to puppy classes, and have contacted a behavioural person to help. The evening settling is a pain, but she will sit for half an hour chewing a frozen Kong and I have her on the lead next to me. I feel like the worst, most irresponsible owner in the world right now, with the worst puppy. Can anyone advise. Should her recall and not jumping up be perfect by this age? Can anyone help with the evening settling? I know im not doing well and want to do better.

Very worrying that the dog was able to chew leads in the van?? Why were the leads left within his reach? How dangerous.

Have a dog behaviourist meeting & another training session booked! Feeling much happier now.

@MotionActivatedDog I think they had leads on while in van to make it quicker/easier to unload them 🤷‍♀️

That says to me that this lady really isn't as experienced as she claims.

Dogs in a van with leads is a danger - they could strangle themselves, chew themselves free, swallow a chunk of lead...it's really not advisable to leave leads on unattended dogs.

Is she licensed to have dogs in her home like this?

For this alone I’d never leave my dog with her again.

Yes definitely licensed. Oh god @Postdatedpandemic - 3 years?!!!! My difficult dog is currently flaked out on floor after her walk!!

Relax @Piggy42 mine is now nearly two and a half and has grown up nicely.

Honestly who leaves a lead on a dog in a car? Might as well smear peanut butter on the lead or give the dog a rabbit's ear, there is no difference in the dog's view.

From reading the OP I had assumed that the leads were in the van, but not necessarily on the dogs - and assumed they were thrown on the floor of the van.

It's just as dangerous. The dog could get tangled up in the lead, chew it and swallow a bit of it etc.

I'm a dog walker myself and NEVER leave dogs on their leads while they're being transported. Dogs get secured safely in my car and leads are put on before they get out.

Only just seen this but had to say something as you sound so upset and sound like you think you're failing as a dog owner.

Please stop beating yourself up about this. The women your dog boarded with sound complete inexperienced around dogs. And frankly sounds like an idiot.

You've got a mixture of two of the most intelligent and high energy dogs on the planet. And your dog is now a teenager? What the hell did she expect, that a teenage cockerpoo is going sit quietly every evening come 7.30.

Just be thankful your dog will no longer be welcome at her place. Your dog doesn't want to go there anyway. You need to find someone who knows dogs and can cope with anything dog related.

Teenage dogs can be a nightmare.

At least your dog is recalling, at that age my dog, neither cocker nor poo, would recall and then run off 'laughing'. In the end I had to have her on a long training lead for months. Absolutely fantastic recall once she'd calmed down.

It's what teenage dog dog.

Please don't let this stupid woman knock your confidence.

Personally I would say the person who looked after your dog is unqualified. Your dog is still young. Find someone else to look after your dog in future. What qualifications do they have. Check their website. I would bet none are accredited qualifications. Don't beat yourself up over it.
