AIBU or is MIL?

DH and I are renovating, workmen, diggers, garden is a bog etc. MIL announced yesterday that she had her bitch mated with a stud. The main reason being so she can give us a puppy for Christmas! Part of me thinks it a nice gesture, but it also feels wrong. We planned to go to a rescue, once we have a reasonable garden and the house done. Also, I've had no input into what breed the other dog was, colour temperament etc. We can obviously say no and likely will, but is this just odd behaviour?

yes that's very odd, i'm assuming you've not mentioned that you'd love a puppy from the bitch or anything? but even so just giving someone a puppy with no prior consultation is ridiculous. Tell her no, you don't want to commit to a puppy right now.

SlothMama · 03/08/2021 14:52

She's unreasonable, that's a stupid reason to be breeding her bitch.

AlmostSummer21 · 03/08/2021 14:55

She's barking, not the dog.

Tell her now, clearly, that you do not want one of the puppies and for god sake make sure the dim woman doesn't advertise them through websites.

icedcoffees · 03/08/2021 14:59

She's bonkers. And I suspect she just wants to make money out of her bitch.

I'll bet my bottom dollar that neither dog is health tested, either.

Chunkymenrock · 03/08/2021 15:36

Goodness, how completely irresponsible of her. A dog can be a 16 year commitment. Of course ywnbu to say no thanks.

wetotter · 03/08/2021 15:38

You only add to your family (whether livestock or small humans) when the adults of the household decide to do so.

I find it hard to believe that anyone still thinks a dog as a Christmas present is in any shape or form appropriate

Soubriquet · 03/08/2021 15:40

Make it clear you do not want one of her puppies

I bet the bitch nor the stud underwent any genetic testing to ensure both are completely healthy and have no faulty genes in them or even a simple vet and temperament check

TurqoiseBlue · 03/08/2021 15:52

To clarify, MIL is not a breeder, nor ever had a litter! She said the puppy would be instead of a Christmas present and by dates, would be born long before Dec. I've seen pics of the stud and his profile, which does show genetic testings, lineage, vaccines etc. Her bitch apparently had a vet check, but no genetic tests. Its completely something odd that she would do, without considering to ask us, or even think it all through!

wetotter · 03/08/2021 15:59

Yes, dog gestation is about 9 weeks, puppies must not leave their mothers before 8 weeks. They would usually move to their new homes between 8-12 weeks and if towards the end of that, its right at Christmas, which is exactly the wrong time to be introducing a puppy to a household (unless you're also happy to go very pared back thus year)

BeaBeaBuzz · 03/08/2021 16:00

Bonkers! No way would I agree to that

bunnygeek · 03/08/2021 16:37

Your MIL is a loon. She's clearly seen the prices some puppies are going for and using the whole "puppy for Christmas" (clearly having missed Dogs Trust's famous slogan that's been around for nearly 50 years) as an excuse to butter up the family while she cashes in.

Does she have a particularly desirable dog breed? No health tests is just a huge red flag that she clearly has no idea what she's doing. I would say, no thanks to her to be honest. I mean there's a sad chance there will be no puppies and the bitch loses the litter or even dies due to complications.

Chunkymenrock · 03/08/2021 16:59

What breeds are the 2 dogs, OP?

TurqoiseBlue · 03/08/2021 17:05

@Chunkymenrock

What breeds are the 2 dogs, OP?
Cavapoo and a pure poodle.

If we do got a dog, it would be from a rescue, and preferably a larger breed.

TurqoiseBlue · 03/08/2021 17:05

*get, not got!

OP posts:
bunnygeek · 03/08/2021 17:13

So mostly poodle with a touch of Cav - your MIL definitely saw £££ :(

With the amount of health issues that can occur with Cavs and Poodles, especially with so many poorly bred ones making up the crossbreeds, it's appalling to not consider health tests :(

somethinginthewater · 03/08/2021 19:27

No it's not a nice gesture.
Yes it is wrong.
