Dog eating my pants!

We have a kind, good natured but slightly daft 10 month old springador. She is generally very good and we’ve been through/conquered the generalised chewing - shoes and mats now generally safe, and she has many and varied chew toys.

BUT she has recently turned to systematically targeting my knickers. I am outnumbered 3:1 by sons/husband and she doesn’t touch their shreddies - just mine. Insult to injury is that she has gone for all my faves too. My underwear draw cannot take this attrition rate! Any idea what is behind this and what to do?

It's down to...well, smell.

We smell the most under our arms, on our feet and between our legs. She obviously favours your smell over anyone else's Grin

The only way to stop it is to keep everything out of her reach, which you really need to do anyway as if she swallows a pair it could cause a blockage in her stomach and make her quite unwell.

BiteyShark · 01/08/2021 17:32

I was waiting for someone else to say it but yes it's the smell. It's one of the reasons why socks are also irresistible.

Take it as a complement that she wants something that smells of you. But ultimately you need to make sure she can never get hold of them until she grows out of it which may be never.

dh was laughing at our dog the other day....he likes to have my socks, doesn't chew them just wanders about a bit with them like a trophy.

DH reckons it's like a reverse Dobby the Elf scenario, Dobby gets a sock and is free, Dog steals mine so I can never leave.

Dog is a needy GSD!

LemonViolet · 01/08/2021 17:44

My last dog had a penchant for chewing up the gussets of my knickers. Gross! But nothing you can do apart from prevent access, stop her accessing the laundry basket.

MuggedByTheSleepThief · 01/08/2021 18:04

Thanks everyone - sounds like I’ll just have to get better at protecting the laundry basket - before snd after washing incidentally. I will look at it as a very weird complement - got to take em where you can find em I suppose! Grin

Not sure but I think there is a hint of an apology there

A vet was once in the middle of sternly telling us that we need to be extra vigilant about our dog eating things... and our dog snatched a dressing out of her hand and ate it. I spent the next few minutes trying not to giggle. Our dog is terrible for eating socks. In the end we had to put up a fence to stop him free roaming, as we was getting them out of washing baskets & cupboards.

*he

simbobs · 01/08/2021 18:55

A friend has a dog that used to do this so they had to buy zipped laundry bags to stop him swallowing their socks and underwear. I have not seen a dog opening a drawer but if they can do so you should keep the bedroom doors shut. Mine can open doors when he puts his mind to it but fortunately doesn't go upstairs.

MotionActivatedDog · 01/08/2021 18:58

Keep the wash basket out of his reach.

Brenna24 · 01/08/2021 18:58

Our washing basket loved in the hall cupboard for about a year for precisely that reason. Always mine. At least when it is something specific like that you can 3asily lock it away.

@Ladyrattles I love your dog's style.

MotionActivatedDog · 01/08/2021 18:59

*her reach!

DramaAlpaca · 01/08/2021 19:01

My niece's lab had a habit of stealing and eating her pants. The worst thing was them coming out the other end. Eurgh.

pisspants · 01/08/2021 19:02

mine has developed a habit of tipping the bathroom bin over and trying to eat used san pro and panty liners 🤢🤢🤢

MuggedByTheSleepThief · 01/08/2021 19:41

@pisspants Shock well I’ll thank god for small mercies and I just hope she doesn’t diversify as that sounds a bit grim!

he's only just started but had my suspicions with some remains, was confirmed yesterday when had to remove it from his mouth- he did not give it up easily! 🤢

MNSEN · 01/08/2021 21:19

Oh God mine does this. I thought it was just me. It's just so so so awful. And expensive. And so clearly all about the gusset 😳

vodkaredbullgirl · 01/08/2021 21:26

Yes I've got 2 labs who like pants and socks. Although my 6 yr old lab is growing out of it, my nearly 2 yr old has been doing it for some months.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/08/2021 23:07

Mine will do a prewash if he gets a chance, but fortunately doesn't actually eat them.

A neighbour's dog died after eating a sock so please if yours does anything more than lick you really must be vigilant and not allow access.

Ours does chew up used tissues, though from the amount of debris I don't think ingests much. Rather disturbingly, his favourite is if I've had a nosebleed. HmmConfused
