Pain relief after being spayed

My dog was spayed today but the vet sent her home with no pain relief meds. Is that normal? She's normally a very quiet dog but she is whimpering and grumbling a fair bit still. Her op was at 9:30am and we picked her up at 3:30pm.

We didn't get any pain relief either . I just comforted her when she whimpered. By the next day she was fine but I must admit I thought it was a bit mean . Hope she will have a good night.

Thank you. It does feel mean! Hopefully some chicken will distract her.

For my rough collie, when she had a poorly eye, I was allowed to give her half a paracetamol. She weighed about 15.5 k at the time.

A vet will likely be along, but IIRC they will have given a long acting painkiller before they send them home.

breadfortea · 30/07/2021 20:32

Ours was given a long lasting pain killer at the vets bu also 3 days worth of anti inflammatory as she had been in a lot of discomfort afterwards, she isn't very brave. We slept in the sitting room with her the first night, she was alot better 24 hours later.

She's properly crying now, not just whimpering. God, I feel awful listening to it. I'm doing my best to comfort her, am sitting right next to her, trying to be calming! She's eaten some dinner and had a wee so that's a good sign, right? Perhaps she's just being a bit dramatic rather than in a lot of pain (please tell me yes Sad )

She weighs about 9.5kg but I don't feel comfortable giving her a paracetemol I don't think. The vet is open for a few hours tomorrow morning so I think I will ring them, just to check. I hope she goes to sleep soon. :(

One of our dogs kept crying afterwards so we called the vet and they prescribed something. We picked it up without have to take doggo with us. The vet said most dogs are fine but some need something extra. Our boy is no longer with us but he was a very sensitive boy about lots of things. Give the vet a call and they’ll give something. Our boy was so much better with a bit more pain relief.

One of our dogs was trying to run and jump in the garden within hours. We had to use a crate to keep her still.

Also, is there someone at your vet overnight if it gets too bad. Ours are 24 hour so we had to call at about midnight, had meds by 1am and he was settled by 2am and slept till morning.

Goingbywhattime · 31/07/2021 01:58

Hope she's settled or you've been able to speak with a vet. Its really hard not being able to help them feel better.

It may also not be pain but a reaction to the drugs if this is her first GA you've experienced, as one of my dogs cried all night after anesthesia which i only discovered long time after it was actually the sedative drug bupracare she reacts to and is totally fine with methadone, so in her notes not to use in future.

SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 31/07/2021 10:55

How’s she doing this morning OP?

SoddingWeddings · 31/07/2021 11:03

Bloody hell, we were sent home with tramadol for our girl! She needed it for a few days at least.

How's your girl doing today?

Merrz · 31/07/2021 11:12

My vet routinely sends home with Metacam for a few days but not to to start until the day after the op as they get a pain killer/anti inflammatory injection at the time of the op which lasts 24 hours

Wildly · 31/07/2021 12:05

Ended calling the OoH/emergency vet and getting her some pain relief. She's been snoozing all morning and no more crying and whimpering!

Ah, bless her. She’s obviously comfortable now. ❤️

Anonaymoose · 31/07/2021 14:31

Honestly that is unacceptable. Ovariohysterectomies are extremely painful. I've worked in vets for 25 years and have never known one not to give at least 3-5 days pain relief. The jab they get on the day last 12-24 hours max. I would be looking for another vet.

SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 31/07/2021 14:56

Just realised in my first post it sounds like our dogs, girls and 1 boy, didn’t come home with pain relief. They did, just that our boy needed another type alongside to make him comfortable.
He was whimpering when he came home. he was so sensitive we just thought he was a bit traumatised at being away from us for a few hours but when it carried on, that’s when we called the vet. The whimpering stopped within an hour of the extra meds so he had clearly been in pain. I felt so guilty not calling sooner once I saw his settled he was with the extra painkiller.
