Our first day with our new puppy. I was under the impression the puppy would bark when it needed the toilet. Our dog doesn't cry or bark and just poo's on the floor. Not really sure where I go from here...?

And yes groomer app are like gold dust now I fires after so many more people got more puppies than usual . They are pretty much impossible to book short notice here . After having our monthly app at the excellent nearby very popular one I suddenly run into trouble in may and due to a kennel cough a while ago again so now trying to schedule several months ahead at his doggy daycare .I had to literally try ten places before getting his last app

@gettingusedtothelimelight

Err *@GinPink* . The first rule of dog ownership is that you MUST post a photo of your dog when asking a question - especially when it's a puppy!! Sometimes several photos are needed !!!
Hehe here you go!

Nordicmom · 24/07/2021 22:07

In general I’d say it could take months and I’m that time restrict the area he gets to be in and keep at it with the taking I’m out and rewarding . Be consistent and patient it will happen !

Also as far as I know poodles are an intelligent breed so it might well learn all kinds of things quite quickly . I knew that small breeds like our Shih Tzu are notoriously hard to house train but I guess until you are in the middle of it you won’t fully understand . I was thinking before hand that to the sounds of it it’s the one negative in the breed and it seems to be so . He hasn’t had any other issues . Has never had issues with barking , chewing unsuitable things he quickly learned not to anything but his own toys or anything other destruction , snapping or biting we thought him the word “ Auh “ as a puppy if he used his teeth too roughly while playing . He is very calm happy to chill on his own or in company can be now left in a room and won’t do anything naughty just sleep or play with his own toys ( we do still use the pens if we can’t supervise as well and always make sure there’s nothing around that’s harmful if he’s not in a pen ) . Loves company too and will follow me to see what I’m doing while I’m doing mundane housework . This breed responds well generally to being trained by rewards and little treats he loves it and has learned about 10 commands so far 😁!

Just remember when it’s hard and a disaster strikes it will be something you will get through . Things will be broken , puppy will get sick etc but like with children you will get through it , it all will be a phase the puppy will grow and change . Enjoy the cute sweet puppyhood , all the milestones it lasts such a short time a few months and soon it’ll be fully grown adult . Take lots of pictures , videos it’ll be wonderful to watch them later when your dog will be all bigger and different and you’ll wonder how where’s they ever do small funny and cute !!! Have lots of puppy cuddles and make the most of it .

Nordicmom · 24/07/2021 22:23

I never joined the puppy threads but might well still head there …

Didn't you buy a book about puppies? Like you do when you're having a baby?

Everyone needs a user manual surely

Nordicmom · 24/07/2021 22:45

And so is yours Ginpink !
Oh and other than housetraining start the other training right away now that your puppy is little !!!!!

Nordicmom · 24/07/2021 22:50

He is now soon 10 m . We got him at 9 w . Can’t believe he’s been here nearly 8 m . And I really can’t believe he’s soon got his first birthday ! We will definitely be baking him his first cake 🎂! He recently tried Jude’s dog ice cream ( non dairy ) and some dog ice lollies in this heat and I just got him a paddling pool 😄. After a wait of 10 y or my whole life really he might just be one of the most spoiled little doggies around , he’s definitely loved and wanted .

@GinPink
It's good you're asking questions. It's also important to note that trainers are very variable. It's not a protected term and literally anyone can set themselves up as a dog trainer. What qualifications does yours have? If he/she starts talking about being the leader of the pack or the alpha/top dog then get rid - they're about 60 years out of date.

Look on apdt.co.uk for a reputable trainer. And please read John Bradshaw's 'in defence of dogs' to make sure you have a good grounding in dog behaviour

www.penguin.co.uk/books/176/176833/in-defence-of-dogs/9780141046495.html

If you have children then please train them in safe child dog interactions ASAP and ensure they are actively supervised at all times

Dogs trust have some excellent training videos

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 25/07/2021 08:30

If you’re on Facebook the group Dog Training Advice and Support is excellent and has whole units on puppies (which you must read before posting any questions). Puppy threads on here are a haven

OldTinHat · 25/07/2021 09:53

Just random, but I read yesterday about a family in Hampshire who have a 6ft monitor lizard as a pet. They've trained him to scratch the back door when he needs to toilet!

I rescued my ddog when he was 3yrs so didn't have to house train him, but you do have to train a dog to do everything - to sit, to wait, to lie down, to come when he's called...everything, including house training. Repetition and reward. Keep taking your pup outside as PPs have said. You'll get there but pup won't learn by itself.

Welcome to poodle hood! I have 2 minis, one is 16 months and one is 11 weeks. They are absolutely brilliant dogs and I hope you have the best times together.

Try and ignore the vipers- the doghouse is actually mental sometimes with the harshness.

One thing though, our puppies go to the groomers at 12 weeks and 16 weeks for a basic freshen up- bath and eyes and bum cut- then after that go every 5/6 weeks for a full groom. We give Hamish a bath every other week or so as he's a mucky pup.
