Bitch with hernia but pregnant?

Rubyrecka · 24/07/2021 12:23

My dog she's 3 small breed and has a small hernia in the grove of the inside of her right hind leg. It doesn't cause her any issues. However I'm concerned this will cause a issue if she were to fall pregnant with her belly expanding. She's not in heat at the moment but I'm wondering if we were to breed would this cause a issue or do we need to get it sorted first?

I don't think you are meant to breed from dogs with hernias as they can be hereditary and then the puppies could have hernias.

GSD20 · 24/07/2021 14:41

Why would you want to breed from a dog with a genetic problem.

Totally irresponsible if you were to do it.

Floralnomad · 24/07/2021 15:31

What you need to do is get her spayed and have the hernia fixed at the same time .

Motorina · 24/07/2021 15:52

At the very least, you need to have the hernia examined by a vet to find out before you even think of mating her. You could do it at the same time as getting her hip scored and any breed specific genetic or other health tests.

If you're not planning on doing all of that as a bare minimum then don't breed.

That's useful. We will get her evaluated by the vet and go from there.

Why on earth would you breed from a dog with a hernia? I don't even like dogs very much, but this would seem like a pretty obvious thing even to me! And why would you ask on MN rather than asking, you know, an actual vet Hmm

@MotionActivatedDog

Why would you breed her?
For money I expect, why else do people do it? It's not for the dog's benefit is it Sad
StinkyLilSinner · 24/07/2021 19:18

Yes @Rubyrecka but you didn't think to ask the vet until some random on MN suggested it Confused

And I bet you don't ask the vet, I bet you risk your dog's health and that of her puppies by breeding her anyway because you've paid over the odds for some mongrel designer small breed and have £££ in your eyes. Because frankly, anyone who knows anything about dogs or cares about the health of their dog wouldn't need to be asking this question on fucking Mumsnet and wouldn't even consider breeding from this dog!

Oh shush now. Your getting over emotional about my dog. Have a G&T and relax

Getting her evaluated by the vet is a good start, but it's just a start.

If you look on the kennel club website they have lots of information on preparing to breed your dog. If you search the breed A to Z for your breed (or breeds, if she's a cross) you will find a list of recommended breed-specific health tests. For mine, these start at £160. Both bitch and sire will need testing, of course. Hip and elbow scoring will be another £400 or so, again for both bitch and sire.

That's assuming, of course, that the vet is happy that the hernia isn't heritable and won't cause any issues in pregnancy.

StinkyLilSinner · 24/07/2021 23:19

I take it from your response that I was bang on Grin

I mean wevs, you do you hun, but you did ask... What did you think people were going to say? Did you not do some basic googling of your dog's medical condition?
