Carpet cleaners

The machine type -not the sprays.

DDog should perhaps have been put forward to the Guinness Book of Records for slowest housetraining!

But we got there in the end.

There are however a couple of bits off carpet that are a bit the worse for wear, and I want to try cleaning them before deciding on placement.

Any recommendations for which machine? There seem to be oodles when I google, and at all sorts of price points.

Is a carpet cleaner better than a steam mop?

Anyone got a firm favourite that has coped with dogginess?

Envy
Not envy.

I've tried scrubbing!

Lots of muck has come out, but it dried even darker. Is there something obvious I'm doing wrong!

The smells either gone, or we've all gone nose blind! It's the marks I'm trying to get out

We used the Bissell StainPro 10 and have always found it up to the job - including a particularly messy bout of puppy diarrhea. Ug.

I’d hire a professional carpet cleaner to come and do it. I’ve never been able to to as well myself hired machines. I’ve just had my stairs, landing and a large bedroom done for £46

I have the Bissell Little Green pro heat. I love it. Small, light, easy to store. It is not for cleaning a whole carpet, just small areas.

It has saved an expensive Persian rug when our dog vomited on it. Came right out and you would never know.

I also have used it on upholstery with good results,

No, I don't work for Bissell!

LoveFall · 21/07/2021 20:07

I am in Canada. I looked on the UK Amazon site and the equivalent is called the Bissell Spotclean pet pro. Looks very close except it's not green.

I have the Bissel ReadyClean Pet 3 but I don't recommend it - the vacuum is poor and the carpets take ages to dry (couple of days and with previous cleaners they would be dry by evening)

wetotter · 21/07/2021 20:32

Thanks - I'm looking these up. Reviews are a bit mixed - even the positive ones say it's very loud and has a few other drawbacks

I think the smaller spot cleaner sounds like the sort of thing I'm after, and as well as the Bissell the other brand that popped up is Rug Doctor.

If a spot cleaner isn't up to the job, then either hiring a bigger machine or getting someone in will be the next step. But then I'd feel the need to clear the floors and get two whole rooms done, and the mere thought is exhausting!

I bought mine at 3am one morning in utter dispair after an explosive night for my poor girl... its a not very expensive vax. It takes a while to use and is noisy but for how often I've had to use it, it does clean Well enough. Disclaimer tho, my flat is tiny and the carpet space is even smaller so if you've a bigger space to clean it probably would be worth getting a better model.

Downsize2021 · 21/07/2021 21:50

The main selling point was next day collection. It was a very, very desperate situation....

Wolfiefan · 21/07/2021 21:55

I’ve got a little Bissell as well. It has seen us through two lots of toilet training gigantic puppies plus a cat who developed cancer in his guts. Sad

CoffeeBeansGalore · 21/07/2021 22:01

I have a domestic Rug Doctor. It's brilliant. I've had several and this is by far the best, most robust and most efficient. Carpet is totally dry by next morning & able to be walked on in a few hours.
They are all noisy.

wetotter · 21/07/2021 22:18

Thanks - this is really helpful.

Useful to know that they're all noisy

I’ve got this one:

BISSELL ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro | Upright Carpet Cleaner | Carpets Dry In About 30 Minutes | With CleanShot Pre-Treater & Pet Hair Removal Tool | 20666 www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07C78HWM5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_QRSNP8YB53KJXSMW7EWS?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Very happy with it! Unlike my previous machine (which was also a Bissell, and lasted for years) it’s much easier to get at the rollers and clean out thoroughly (very important when you have hairy pets). Do follow the instructions! Don’t add more shampoo than recommended (less is definitely more) and don’t go over the same area repeatedly thinking it will get it cleaner. I’ve done both of these things before, and ended up with powdery residue which was an absolute nightmare to remove.

Their heavy traffic pre-treatment spray also makes a BIG difference. If you do use this, I would cut down the amount of shampoo slightly though.

If your carpets are older, the dark marks can be caused by the carpet backing or underlay and over wetting. Although the machine I have has great extraction, a commercial grade machine will extract even more - as PP have said, the cost of hiring a pro to do the whole house can be lower than you think, so if you don’t plan on using it over large areas regularly, you might be better off persevering with sprays/mousses and a brush, then hiring a pro when toilet training is completed?

wetotter · 25/08/2021 18:54

Just back to thank everyone.

I got the Bissell spotclean pet pro - and am amazed at how filthy the waste water is!

I'm really pleased with it - made a huge difference with one going-over. I'm intending to go over the worse areas a second time, once it's dried out completely - I was a bit hit and miss with how much I was spraying!

And the noise is far less than I'd expected after everything the reviews said!
