Neighbour’s dog - crazed barking at night

Hi, our neighbour in the house behind- who we don’t know- must have got a new dog or puppy because the past two nights we have been hearing upsetting yowling/ slightly strangled sounding very loud distressed barking coming from their garden. It goes on for about 15 minutes at a time and is at maybe 20 min intervals between about 9pm and 2am. The dog sounds hysterical for want pf a better word.

Does anyone know why the dog would be doing this and why they are leaving it outside ? It’s keeping us awake and I am worried about the dog. It started up again this afternoon so I went round to investigate. The dog is home alone. Ive put a note through the door saying the noise is distressing and anti social and that I am considering contacting the RSPCA but was this the right thing to do?

Report them every single day... What utter twats...

I panicked when I read this as the last two nights we have a new puppy and she has made some very odd noises trying to howl in the night!

I am not able to have her upstairs so she is safely in a crate and next to my older dog. She is used to sleeping in a crate but as she is in a new place she is seeking constant companionship. So if we leave her any time she 'howls' like a dying seagull.

Obviously we haven't left her alone completely though. And she certainly doesn't carry on for as long.

Maybe similar is happening at your neighbours house? It's odd the dog has been left so distressed for that long but it's worth finding out before judging maybe.

I don't know what my neighbours must think! Everyone has their windows open at the moment too. Hopefully it's short lived. It's very hard for anyone to settle in this heat.

I think some noise at night is fairly par for the course for a new puppy for the first few nights tbh. It sounds odd that it's outside though. Have you seen the pup?

Report every single time.

Its unfair and cruel to the dog. If it gets in the habit you will be listening for a long time (like hours)

I own dogs this is not normal.

Massive increase in dogs howling in my area over the last few months. I’m not sure if it’s because they’re now being left outside in the warmer weather or if they’re new dogs but it’s really distressing.

warmfluffytowels · 22/07/2021 13:35

I suspect they've got the puppy and just carried on with their lives without thinking about sorting out a dog walker or daycare.

Report it. It's cruel.

If they were there, I would have a chat with them, because what sounds like distress to you might not be. Mine will howl like banshees and what they're actually saying is, "Look! I found a butterfly! A butterfly! It's so exciting! Come look! Play with me butterfly!" It sounds like they're dying. They're not. They're just noisy. (And, yes, I intervene and don't let it carry on to disturb my neighbours.)

But clearly it's a different matter if the dog is home alone, particularly at night. Unfortunately I doubt the RSPCA will do anything if it has the bare minimum of food, water, and shelter. Which leaves you with the choice of putting up with it, or going down the noise nuisance route with your council.
