How long would a 12kg bag last? We are looking at the following brands, does anyone have any advice on which is best value for money or any to avoid?

Orijen
Acana
Millie's wolfheart
Lily’s kitchen

I don't want to feed raw. Many thanks!

If you go on the all about dog food website. Put in your dogs breed and weight it tells you how much of each food your dog needs a day and works out the cost. We are using millies wolfheart worked out at 87p per day. Lily's kitchen was much dearer.

Depends how big the dog is! They have feeding guides on their websites, so just work it out based on the predicted weight of your dog. Eg 250g per day for a medium sized dog will give you about 48 days

Sorry should have said, it's for a cockapoo - working cocker spaniel cross miniature poodle

It depends on the dog. Origin and acana are the same but origin has a slightly higher protein count, it’s like the fancy acana.

Both our dogs were on acana/origin the 15kg adult dog had about 180g a day so a bag would last about a month. The 22kg puppy is on significantly more and a bag lasts him about 3 weeks. You’ll also need to consider how active your dog is as well as the feeding guidelines, if they’re more active then they’re going to get through food quicker.

I would say that the all about dog food website underestimates how much our dogs need and so prices it lower than it actually is. Some of it is also experimenting with a food and seeing how they get on with it. We can’t get the puppy to put weight on with acana, despite being at the upper end of the feeding guidelines so we’re looking into alternatives. You might find that some foods work better, so while they might appear less cost effective at first glance, they aren’t if you can give them a lower amount of food.

MaePup loves Lily's Kitchen. Wet and dry. MaeDog loved it when he was smaller too.

I buy two bags of Millie's at a time and it takes my 11kg cockerpoo 5 months to eat the two bags, but I measure the food for every single meal.

It massively depends on all sorts of things:

  • the estimated weight of your dog as an adult.
  • whether you're just feeding dry or will add wet (many dogs won't actually eat dry kibble - personally I think it's a very dull diet for dogs).
  • will your dog eat 12kg worth of one flavour without getting bored?
  • the quality of the food - the more expensive brands (with less fillers) will generally last longer as they're more filling.

My beagle weighs about 17kg and we mix wet and dry - he's fed once a day and a 2kg bag of Harringtons lasts him around 2.5 weeks. He gets a large handful each day mixed with around 125g of wet food.

Oh and yes, activity levels are important to. A dog who gets one hour per day won't need as much food as one who gets three hours :) our dog gets between 1-3 hours per day.

I mix feed Millie’s wolfheart ranger kibble and Applaws tins . Dog has wet food for breakfast and a mix of both at tea . He is 15/16 kg and a 12kg bag lasts 4 months easily . If I fed him the recommended amount , even taking into consideration the wet food he would be the size of a small pony .
