Best Insurance for Labrador

Does anyone have any recommendations? We have 4 weeks free with Kennel club for our golden Labrador so need to get on to sorting who we'll go with. His parents have clear eyes and excellent hip and elbow scores but as I understand that's not a guarantee our pup won't develop anything so I'd ideally like to be covered in case but for a good price, I'm not too sure what I'm looking for.

Also how much do you pay if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks so much Grin

Not sure on insurance cost for a lab but I’d recommend petplan. Most vets deal with them directly, they pay out quickly and even though they’re one of the pricier ones they don’t increase the prices massively each year or if you claim.

PetPlan all the way, it is expensive but covers far more stuff than all others by far. I had it with my previous dogs but went with more than with this one, big mistake, problem is my dog is so old now it is not possible to change without paying a fortune.

Most pet insurance you can't claim on, in the first 4 weeks of the cover starting m. So make sure you get cover before the one you have at the moment expires.

Bought by Many is also good

Kennel club, bought by many and Pet plan

Thank you! We have two cats with pet plan so I'll stick with them this one. Really appreciate the replies Flowers

And thanks for the tip of getting it to start two weeks before the current one runs out!

As long as can prove you have had concurrent equal cover, there is no need for you to have an overlap. The waiting period is only for animals that have no insurance cover before the new policy is incepted. The waiting period will cover accidents but not illness or disease.

Also, you could try NFU Mutual. And go for a higher Vets Fees sum insured if you can. One of my whippets shattered his hock - it cost £4,000 to pin and wire it back together.

I use bought by many for my Lab. They have been great so far, had to claim for him going to Vet school to see a specialist ophthalmologist and super easy. I think I’m about 30 a month.

PermanentlyDizzy · 20/07/2021 17:00

I always recommend PetPlan and wasn’t going to post because others have already recommended them, but as you have mentioned you have two cats with them already, did you know you get a discount for multi-pet policies with them. It’s not much, but is worth having.

PetPlan Multi-Pet Insurance

I use Tesco, top tip though is never renew without negotiating! Just claimed £5k so got every penny back and some.

CatchThatCat · 20/07/2021 17:07

I love Bought by Many which was cheaper than Pet Plan when I compared but worth checking that and been brilliant as they paid Vet direct when we needed it. If anyone wants a referral you get a £20 amazon voucher

I used Marks and Spencer (paid vet directly for huge bill) then when they were ambivalent about covering working gundogs I swapped to Petguard. I would also look at NFU Mutual and Agria. It depends what you are looking for in terms of cover.

We have an 8 year old lab on petplan £4k/lifetime.

Started around £28/month as a pup, renewal this year is £65/month. Don't even want to think how much it will be in 2-3 years time!

It has been worth it as we have claimed for surgery, MRI scans etc. We have always (just!) been within the £4k limit, but as he gets older beginning to worry we might get bigger bills, but it is one of those things where once you have preexisting conditions it is difficult to change insurer, so choose carefully. We have claimed more than insurance has cost us so far and it has been really easy to claim with vet sending bills directly to petplan.

Surgery was for luxating patella (knee joint slipping out), MRI investigations were for eye issues indicating a possible brain tumour (was found on MRI to be something else).
