Does anyone else's dog leave semen around the house 🤢

Sorry for the gross topic but this is becoming a bit of an issue. Our dog is 18 months old and his penis constantly leaks semen. He leaves little puddles of it wherever he sits. It's mostly noticeable on the window sills. I dont really want to stop him sitting there as he loves lying in the sun watching the world go by but it's disgusting!

Will he grow out of it? He's not castrated due to having a nervous temperament.

No, neither of my entire dogs do this, and I can't really see how they would! Are you sure he doesn't have an infection?

trevorandsimon · 13/07/2021 18:59

Why do you think it's semen? Surely it's wee?!
What's being nervous got to do with not being castrated?

Unsoliciteddeckpic · 13/07/2021 19:00

Non of my male dogs have ever done this.

Have you had him at the vet about this?

TiddyAndFletch · 13/07/2021 19:00

I'd take him to the vet - it might be an infection.

Thanks for the replies, will get him checked out at the vet to see if he's got an infection.

It's definitely not wee.

trevorandsimon it's advised not to castrate nervous dogs as their testosterone levels can affect their confidence.

How long has it been going on?

Bloomingwild282 · 13/07/2021 19:12

Probably since adolescence. Come to think of it, he's had thorough vet checks since it started but I will take him and ask.

I call it willy juice 😂 my boy has it and it’s perfectly normal, especially for an entire male.

Bryonyshcmyony · 13/07/2021 19:28

I have an entire lab and he's never done this, no. In fact I've had a few male dogs in my time and none have done it.

I'd castrate him, never heard of the confidence thing?!

pontiouspilates · 13/07/2021 19:33

My bully used to do this but it stopped when he was neutered

Skybluepinkgiraffe · 13/07/2021 19:34

Same as @pontiouspilates

Bargebill19 · 13/07/2021 19:34

Wow. Always found castration calms them down. For both nervy and aggressive dogs.
Stops a lot of potential medical problems as well. Hormones have a lot to answer for.

Bloomingwild282 · 13/07/2021 19:34

BeeDavis haha! It's horrible isn't it 😄

Bryonyshcmyony with respect, I won't be going against our vet and behaviourists advice not to castrate him.

Now I know why I do not have a dog.

Bloomingwild282 · 13/07/2021 19:36

Bargebill19 you're right that hormones do have a lot to answer for and in the case of nervous dogs the testosterone gives them confidence.

Have always found that removing the testosterone makes them calmer as they get less wound up about things. Less flighty and nervy. Never heard of it as an excuse to leave them intact.
Get him done.

Bargebill19 · 13/07/2021 19:43

No actually I will say I have heard of one trainee who would agree with you. It turned out it was because they wanted the dog as a stud for their own bitch. He knew he stood to make thousands of pounds.
Thankfully the owner did get the dog neutered seen to before hand. Even their vet was astounded at the trainers advice. They supposedly had a nervy dog too.

Bargebill19 · 13/07/2021 19:43

Trainer. Did I need new slimline fingers.

Bloomingwild282 · 13/07/2021 19:53

Bargebill19 I appreciate you sharing your experience but again, I'd rather follow the advice of our vets and behaviourist. Our dog is lovely and calm at home and doing really well with his confidence out on walks so I'm not going to run the risk of ruining that for the sake of a leaky penis! We will never use him as a stud!

Bargebill19 · 13/07/2021 19:59

In that case, get used to cleaning up a lot of semen.

EmRata95 · 13/07/2021 20:02

Oh god, my old staffy years ago used to do that 🤣 Now there's a memory I'd forgotten about. Bleurgh. Also my friend has been advised NOT to neuter her nervous dog. The advice has changed now, due to recent studies showing neutering can make anxious/nervous/ reactive dogs worse, not better. Most vets recognise this. I myself was asked loads of questions by the vet about my dogs behaviour and temperament before they would consider neutering him.

Must be like having one huge snail roaming around your house!!
