Jumping up

Can anyone recommend successful methods of stopping jumping up? our 13 month old cocker gets so excited when greeting visitors (and sometimes when out on walks at random strangers) he just can't help himself jumping up and it's both annoying and embarrassing at times. We've tried saying down and holding our hands out to stop him but he's just not getting it..

Have you tried turning your back? Ours (wcs) is a similar age and gets v overexcited but denying him attention (turning our backs) till all paws are on the ground has really worked.

I can actually see him thinking about doing it then remembering we might turn our backs and then stopping Grin

You need to get your visitors on board with doing this for a bit

Seconding the advice to turn your back as soon as he starts (and get guests to do the same). Making a sharp ‘uh-oh!’ as you do it can help to reinforce the message.

You could try getting your visitors to give him a stern command to sit for a treat as they come in (leave the treats for them to pick up on the doorstep before they come in.) It can help set the tone for expected behaviour around them. My cocker is very keen to follow instructions from guests who also supply treats so this works for him.
