Moving to new house with no grass

RogersVideo · 09/07/2021 14:51

We currently live in a small house that has a grassed garden around three sides. We're moving to a much bigger house in an area with brilliant dog walks BUT its an old terrace with a small garden that is laid entirely with stone tiles.

If you have a dog and no grass, how is it? I don't think my dog will have any problems toileting on stone tiles, but does it start to smell? Any tips?

I have a paved garden and it’s starting to smell after 6 months of having a puppy. I wash it down but when the sun shines it’s yuk so hopefully someone will come along with a miracle cure that won’t kill the dog.

Beebumble2 · 09/07/2021 15:16

Could you lay a patch of turf over some of the paving? If you water it well it might survive.

EmeraldShamrock · 09/07/2021 15:18

Invest in a roll of fake grass and change it regularly or train the dog to go in a certain area. My Dsis dog only uses the side entrance beside the drain it is easily rinsed.

StrongArm · 09/07/2021 15:56

We have to take ours out to do his business as he won't do it on the paved area unless completely desperate. We also went from grass to paved and he's never really taken to it! He mainly wees on his walks and if he's desperate he will go on the paving but he prefers not to!

30degreesandmeltinghere · 09/07/2021 15:58

You need a jet washer
..

Bluntness100 · 09/07/2021 16:00

My friend has a dog and a paved garden, dog does her business out there I’ve never ever witnessed it smelling.

squeaver · 09/07/2021 16:02

We have slabs and raised beds. The dog usually goes in the beds rather than on the slabs but either way, we just lift poos and bin them. The rain tends to take care of wees, although we do jet wash maybe twice a year, It's never even occurred to me that there could be a smell.

rbe78 · 09/07/2021 16:10

I'd lift some slabs in one corner and make it into a soil dog loo - if you think you can retrain your DDog to go there.

thethoughtfox · 09/07/2021 16:18

You can buy a Piddle Patch! There are different companies but they have real grass patches you can use inside or out!

You can get doggy toilets for balconies and concrete floors - they're popular in America where many people have dogs in apartments. I would get one of those and pop it in the corner of the garden, then train the dog to pee there.

However be aware that your dog might not want to go on concrete - I walk numerous dogs who have concrete garden areas and they all have to be walked multiple time a day so they go to the toilet!

Mychitchatdays · 09/07/2021 16:48

My dog doesn't use the garden as a toilet. We are surrounded by green fields and walkways.

79andnotout · 09/07/2021 16:48

Yeah we have this. It stinks if our dogs use it regularly so we try to take them out for short walks for all their peeing if possible. We jetwash fairly regularly which helps but doesn't cure.

Floralnomad · 09/07/2021 17:03

My dog generally only has access to the patio for toileting at home and we keep a watering can with diluted Dettol disinfectant in it and I wash down as soon as I’ve picked up / he’s peed which is generally fairly soon after the event . No smell here .

Bebeschitt · 09/07/2021 19:13

Our old dog used to toilet on our yard area but we would jet wash it fortnightly and used a bio washing liquid solution (just value bio from the supermarket) to scrub the concrete with in between.
New girl needs something softer underfoot so we have put a couple of sacks of untreated bark chips down in one corner where there used to be a flower bed. Saves the lawn!

XelaM · 09/07/2021 22:01

We have mostly slabs with a patch of soil where lots of plats grow. Our dog doesn't mind peeing on slabs at all and it doesn't smell whatsoever 🤷‍♀️ But he poos on the soil part

XelaM · 09/07/2021 22:04

Plants*

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 09/07/2021 22:43

Our dogs mostly pee on a slabbed area by the kitchen door. We swill it daily, and then about fortnightly in the summer (less often in the winter) we sluice it down with a solution of Virkon - this stuff here

Gets rid of the smell completely.

Two dogs here, male and female and it stinks! Hate having my backdoor left open. Only thing i find that works is white vinegar after we rinse it down into a soil patch in the eve we pump spray 50/50 water and white vinegar everywhere as the male loves to pee everywhere and any where even after walks he runs to the garden to pee more 🤦🏽‍♀️🙄 you can buy it on Amazon fairly cheaply but out of everything I've tried, this actually works.

pigsDOfly · 10/07/2021 00:12

I clicked on here because I'm looking to move and many houses I've looked at have paved over gardens, which would be a real problem for my dog as she'll only ever go on grass.

I hope you'll forgive me for hijacking your thread OP but I just wanted to thank thethoughtfox for posting that link to piddle patch.

Brilliant, I didn't know such a thing existed. If I end up with a garden with no grass I'll definitely be signing up with them.

bunnybuggs · 10/07/2021 07:29

I now this is slightly off topic but I have a bit of a problem with where my dog decides to poo - she will use the garden for weeing (fairish sized lawn) but she is very reluctant to poo there (unless she is desperate)
First thing I will let her out - she will do a wee then straight back in. If I then take her for a walk within 5 minutes she will do a poo on the pavement followed a few minutes later by a second helping as it were.
This is v annoying as I would prefer her to go in the garden (as my previous dogs had all been trained to do) rather than pooing outside where I have to pickup and find a poo bin
I have tried praise when she does it in the garden - but nothing seems to work. I suspect as she is an older dog - she has been trained to go on hard surfaces outside the home environment.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 10/07/2021 11:24

Buy your ddog her own flagstones!! Maybe 2? She will be thrilled I expect!! Put them down where you want her to poo! On a corner of the lawn maybe?

RogersVideo · 10/07/2021 14:02

Interesting that some of you find it smells, and some don't. Maybe depends on size of dog, type of surface and amount of rain and sun?

Anyway, lots of good ideas here, I will probably try a variety of them after we move to figure out what works. Thanks all!

Looking after 10 week puppy while family member is on holiday ( clash of dates!).We have a lawn, but a paved courtyard nearest the house. So as I suggested up thread, we’ve put down turf on the paving (£20 for 4 bits). It’s been a real success. Puppy performs perfectly.
