Looking for a dog

Hi I've been searching for a dog, we want to rehome one rather than buy a puppy. I'm not rich but we have a loving home and have wanted a dog for many years. Now everything has fallen into place and we are ready to be able to have a dog. I have 15 guineas (also rescued) and 3 budgies so I need a dog with a low prey drive like a golden retriever. If anyone knows of anyone who needs to rehome please consider us. I'm a single parent with 2 teenage girls, and a lot of love to give. Thank you

Why don’t you contact breeders or breed clubs of the breeds you like, to see if anyone has and ex breeder or a returned dog that needs a home.

You will have to pay. Contact rescues.

Try happy paws retriever rescue, they have a fb page.

Maybe try Guide Dogs for the blind. They have a Rehoming department for puppies that don’t quite make the grade.

@Babana123 the waiting list is huge and they tend to get rehomed within guide dogs (to puppy raisers etc)

The prey drive thing can vary between dogs regardless of breed, and sometimes it's just curiosity or play, rather than play drive, that can injure small furries - so you will need to make sure their housing is very much dog-secure and supervise any interaction (even through bars) very carefully.

You will have to pay - cheap/free dogs mean a butt load of problems. Contact rescues and be exceptionally patient - demand for dogs is still sky high, especially for dogs that could live with children and other animals, and for desirable breeds.

Dogs trust

Try Irish Retriever Rescue.
You will be very lucky to get a Rescue Goldie though, they are very rare and get snapped up incredibly quickly

Contact all the breed welfare and rescue of those you are interested in.

Are you certain you want a dog with guinea pigs?
I would have thought it was a non starter?

Floralnomad · 09/07/2021 17:52

With teenage children you should be able to rescue , and a rescue will advise whether the dog is suitable . FWIW I’ve a friend with a young Golden Retriever (2 ish) and I wouldn’t trust him anywhere near a guinea pig .

Hm2020 · 11/07/2021 07:24

I had a Pomeranian and a German spitz and had a breeding pair of guinea pigs at the time but they where not aloud around thEm with out supervision obviously but showed not much interest I think it depends on the dog more then breed to be honest

fruitpastille · 11/07/2021 08:05

My Jack Russell is surprisingly uninterested in the Guinea pigs (they are in a cage). I do shut the door to the room they are in when we're not in the house though. It's really hard to get a rescue dog as rehoming criteria are strict and I think a lot of people sell their dogs on rather than send them to rescues. We were very lucky.
