Long lines?

Do I need one? Pup is 19 weeks old recall is good but I only let her off in a quiet field away from other people/dogs so I'm not naive to think she may be distracted and not come back in different circumstances or when she hits adolescence, so should I get a long line?

Are they a trip hazard/prone to tangling up? How long should I get as I don't want to be reeling in loads of lead?! What thickness/material I've seen rope ones, nylon ones and rubbery ones... Amazon has too much choice!!

We use a long line for our 9 month old spaniel who goes selectively deaf around certain distractions (birds, squirrels, leaves) Hmm - would advise you to get a biothane one if you can. We had a fabric/nylon one to start with and it just got so soggy, dirty and tangled the biothane one we have now doesn’t hold water, you can wipe it clean and it doesn’t tangle!

Whilst young it probably isn't needed. I got one when my pup was 7/8 months and starting to wander further, he has just turned one and is doing well with it. We have a 10m biothane one.

I would not go longer than 5m if you are not used to using a long line.

Always attach it to a harness on the back.

Biothane is easy to clean and as said does not soak up water but it can give nasty burns and get slippery when wet. Which may or may not be a problem depending on dog and the terrain.
Houndagrips do biothane with a handle at the end which gets around the slippery issue as they are rubberised

Yep we have a longline- used it from when we first took him out so we could be okay with recall from a really young age. I’d definitely recommend one. They get mucky but it’s far better to have one than keep on the lead and let them off only when you feel ready which is kind of never! The longer you leave it the harder it is!
We also use it when staying away in a caravan so we can tether him but he still has a good run of the surrounds without getting into trouble. I’ll repeat they are mucky but you got a dog right?!

We have this one Maximum Pet Products 65ft 20M Dog & Horse Training Lunge Lead. 25mm - 1" Wide. Very Strong (Black) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01C6391XK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_6AJ4MTG4H6K3TQ29FERT?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21
But Biothane is probably best.
