‘Doughnut’ bed? What else do I need?

I’m passing my self isolation time by making a list of things I’ll need to get when puppy comes to live with us.

Are the doughnut beds recommended? They look very cosy… I’ve got a medium crate on the list and bowls, but that’s about all so far.

Puppies eat beds! Start with some vet fleece!
Stalk dog training advice and support on FB for info to get ready.
Insurance?
Legally you have to have a dog tag on your dog with certain info.
Find good dog trainer!

Puppy coming home with a fleece bed thing, so will start with that.
Insurance - good point. My vets do a subscription that I think included insurance, on my list to call them but will look at quotes from others too. Will look at the legal requirements for tag, I was planning on getting one with just my phone number on it.
Trainer is the breeder, will be seeing her weekly so that’s sorted already.

Look at the KC website. It says what legally must be on the tag. It’s more than phone number! In fact that’s optional!!
Vets may try to sell you a pay monthly for flea and worm treatment and vaccinations. Insurance needs to be lifetime. Read small print very carefully as they vary hugely. And the cost will increase each year. Check with your vet which companies they are happy to claim direct from to save hassle and being out of pocket.
Puppies pee in beds! Vet fleece is the way to go.
Plus a special cleaner to ensure no trace to bring pup back to poo on the floor!
Head torch and quick slip on shoes. You’ll be spending ages in the garden.
Poo bags.
Dog may not be used to a crate.
Also consider how to legally transport pup.

Plastic bed with vet bed for a puppy until they have stopped chewing. Lot of safe puppy toys, plenty of pizzle sticks (to save your hands and furniture). Makre sure puppy has had all relevent check tests, note TESTS not checks and if relevent parents hip score results. Ask the breeder for an old blanket that's been in with the puppies so that it smells of home.

Parents are both fully genetic tested - it’s a WCS being trained as an assistance dog for my daughter, we’ve waited over 2 years for this breeder. He’ll have a piece of the begging they’re currently using so that’s covered. She’ll give me all the info I need, we’ve got a few weeks to wait yet but I like planning…!

So so so many chew toys, kongs, likimats. You need things to keep it interested when you can’t watch him. And a pen that you can fit in as well.

I was just coming to add chew toys and Ovo eggs!
Kongs are fab too.
You are not getting a puppy you are getting a land shark Grin
They grow out of it though!

I just get deer skin sticks for my 5 mo puppy and he LOVES them. Antler chews too and his lickibowl with some cream cheese and puppy food numbed in freezer for a bit keeps him busy while we eat dinner.

Baby Dan style playpen has been brilliant too- initially to keep him in when getting overwrought, now in straightened out manner to keep kids barricaded on the couch when he’s in jumpy mode!

RedLemon · 07/07/2021 19:42

“Just got” not get, “bunged” not numbed. Need to proof read!

BabbleBee · 08/07/2021 12:54

Land shark is probably about right! Hopefully we won’t be too chewed on… the pup stays with mum for a bit longer as he’s being trained for assistance work so maybe she’ll sort him out for me

Antler chews I knew about and have seen lick mats. He’s weaned onto raw, does that make a difference for what we use on the mats?
