I know they say anywhere around 6 months they might get their first season. Just looking for other people's experiences particularly with working cocker spaniel pups.... also when did you neuter if you decided to and did you opt for standard or key hole? Thanks

6 months is young in my experience

I have had cockers. Both working and show for 20 years. The youngest to have her first season was 8 months. Then one didn't have one until 14 months.

Somewhere around a year, is most common.

Do you mean neuter (male) or Spay (female). I have waited until my females are around 2 to 3 for females. And 2 for the male that I had.

Ok thanks for the reply. Mine is 5 months and my first experience of a girl pup so I'm constantly looking out for signs incase she starts early. My parents have 2 intact boy dogs that we visit weekly so I have to be aware of any signs so we don't visit when she is in season as I definitely do not want any incidents!!

I will be getting her spayed but I want to do it when it's best for her and there is so much conflicting advice around when to do it and whether or not key hole is best etc.

Ours have always been keyhole and had no issues.

Its hard to spot the first signs. Each dog can be different. I would say watch for her feeling a bit sorry for herself. Not as cuddly. Will want attention then after a few minutes take themselves off to their bed. And a change in appetite. Ours eat less and then a couple of days onto bleeding, they eat loads.

You will might also notice her genitals are swollen and she is licking them more. You might get some of these signs and not others.

They are most fertile after the bleeding has stopped. For about 2 weeks after. I usually wait until the swelling goes down, before letting them mix with un neutered males. So about 3 weeks after bleeding finishes.
