Are they checking pet pass ports to Ireland?

I went a few years ago and although it was required - they weren’t checking

On the ferry? There’s a whole post-Brexit rigamarole now required but no idea if they check it.

Yes on the ferry - I better look it up then

I'd imagine so. There has been a lot of kidnapping of pedigree Irish dogs and cats since Covid began due to increased demand for pets.

The (mainly) dogs are stolen, chips removed and taken to the UK and resold. It's awful.

So I wouldn't worry so much about getting him into Ireland, it's getting him back out, proving he's yours I'd worry about.

That’s absolutely shocking. Those poor dogs and their poor owners - what dreadful people buy these dogs???

I get the impression the buyers are unwitting, they see a dog advertised online and buy it without really knowing where it came from.

Some people have been able to recover pets.

I know, it's awful. Be careful with your dog, don't leave him unattended.

They have always done spot checks on the Dublin/Holyhead route. We regularly travel with our dogs, via Pembroke or Fishguard to Rosslare and back home Dublin to Holyhead. I’ve only ever seen spot checks in Dublin, but I haven’t been since 2019, so things may have been tightened up on the other routes now as well.

At Dublin they have an inspector who walks around the queuing vehicles looking for dogs. They then pick some to do welfare and paperwork checks on. Our dogs always have the full estate boot, with plenty of comfortable bedding, dog and tailgate guards, a boot bolt and fan for airflow and no-spill water bowls bolted to the tailgate and we have never been stopped. I’m always ready with all the paperwork in a file in my bag just in case, as if they do find something awry, they are entitled to impound your dog.

The people we saw being checked tended to either have young pups or loose dogs bouncing about all over the car with no restraints.

Check out both the UK and Irish Department of Agriculture websites and speak to your vet, as Pet Passports are no longer valid and what you need for compliance has changed.

You need a health certificate with all up to date jabs including rabies (and be warned re Rabies - that takes 10 days to kick in if it isn't just a booster of existing)
Vets are often very booked up too, a senior vet who has done requisite training is only one who can certify. Mine only did Fridays, for example.
And the same to northern ireland

There is a really comprehensive update here
