Hello

I am looking for some feedback on the above cross. I am thinking about adopting one but I am not too sure if I can meet their exercise needs. Would 3 walks a day about 20min each plus access to the garden and some play time at home be sufficient? Longer walks over the weekend.

My sister had 2 of these cross from the same litter and that’s about the level of exercise they got , although they do have a huge garden .

We had a JRT x Patterdale who got 1x 40/45 mins and 1x15/20 mins almost every day. She was happy with that, though obviously could have gone all day - she did the odd 5 mile run with DH without any concern.

Haven't had a JRT (had a Patterdale that was just about happy with 7 hrs rat and bunny killing a day, never again), but I do have a full Border Terrier. He's young and full of beans and very slim, he generally gets 1 x 45/60 mins in the morning off lead, 1 x 20m in the evening on lead, free access to a medium sized garden, and comes for a mooch around town with us quite a lot - he's fine with that.

He actually prefers the shorter, on-lead sniffy walks and socialising with all his mates around the village, than the hour long off lead rambles through fields - he'd love 3 x 20 mins of snuffling about, as long as he could sniff plenty of bums and lick other dogs faces!

He does like a good blast every now and then, just a huge run across a big playing field with some other dogs. He doesn't get it very often because the little shit doesn't come back.

I don't think an hour of exercise per day is necessarily too little, but I don't think a 20 minute walk is long enough, either.

Can you do 2 x 30 minute walks instead? Or 1 x 40 minute walk, and 1 x 20 minute walk?

It depends what you do on your 20 minute walk , we have a huge village green / heath area less than 5 minutes walk from our house and I often take my patterdale x for a 20 minute walk up there - I walk and he runs about like some kind of lunatic . Short walks are better for him now as he’s 11 and has some health issues . He also doesn’t know how to walk when he’s offlead he apparently can only run .
