Pup sick two mornings in a row

I've gradually changed pup over onto millies wolf heart countryside mix. She seems to enjoy it and her poo is much firmer but the last two mornings she's been sick, the first morning was mostly bile/foamy sick with a bit of grass in and today it was proper sick with whole pieces of Millie kibble. I don't know if it's the food not agreeing with her or if she's just not chewing it and digesting it. She was never sick on previous food but her poos were soft and frequent.

Bile and yellow sick in the mornings could be hunger puke from going all night without food, you could try giving a couple of biscuits before bed. If she’s eating her food too quickly, she will bring it back up again. My dog did this for a while, so I slowed down his feeding by putting a small jar or tin in with food so she cannot get to all the food to quickly. You can buy slow feeder bowls, but I found that once he got used to eating slower, he has stuck to eating slowly. You can soften food with either water or goats milk, which will help digesting food.

What time in the morning? Early hours vomiting on an empty stomach, can be a sign of pancreatitis. Ours did that for many months - intermittently enough that we didn’t realise it was a problem, then happening more frequently. Something to keep an eye out for.

I did wonder if hunger but she's 18 weeks and never done it before and she's always had breakfast around the same time. It could be due to eating quickly so I'll try a puzzle feeder tomo. She does have a small amount of wet food mixed in which she tends to eat first lol.

The kibbles are coming up whole so I think she's not chewing them - they are quite large!

I hope it's nothing pancreas related I'll look out for anything else.

@DrinkingWishingSmokingHoping it's not early hours, it's about 7.30/8am

Bile/foam is normally due to hunger - are you feeding her enough and what time is the last meal?

When mine was that age he had three small meals a day plus a snack at bedtime to stop the "hunger pukes" as I called them!

You don't have to give much - I gave him a Lily's Kitchen bedtime biscuit but others on here give Bonios or similar Smile

Ours did the same as a pup due to hunger. We started giving her a snack not too long before bedtime (but long enough that she had time to poo before bed) and problem solved.

With a pup that young, you need to check with a vet. If you have BBM insurance, you can call their vet line even at the weekend.

Dehydration can be rapid in a vomiting puppy - so make sure she is drinking, and if you're not sure, use a syringe to get little amounts of water in to her frequently

Are you soaking the kibble in water? We feed our dog Ranger mix from Millies Wolfheart and we still soften it a bit with water first and we definitely did at that age. The pieces are quite big at a time they are losing teeth and getting their molars. I would also get a slow feeder.

Aria20 · 27/06/2021 17:48

@StrongArm would mixing a bit of wet food be ok instead of water? Yes the kibble is quite big shame they don't do a small version!

@wetotter we are with pet plan. She's not dehydrated I don't think as she is fine the rest of the time and immediately after being sick so I think it's a combination of hunger and gobbling too quick!

@cupsofcoffee I will pick up bed time biscuit when I'm next in pets at home. I do give her a couple of little bedtime treats but maybe it's not enough... her last main meal is about 5.45/6 when we have our dinner too. So it prob is a long time to wait until morning but it's strange how this has only started last 2 days and she had feeds same time before.... I'll see what happens tomorrow

@Aria20 I don't think the wet food would soften the pieces. I would try and soak it in water for about 20mins and see how she goes. I can't imagine mine at that age coping with the big pieces without them being a bit softer tbh. You can then put the wet food on top afterwards? (Btw they do different shapes - think the gun dog mix is round but not sure it's suitable for that age)

Aria20 · 27/06/2021 20:24

Thanks @StrongArm will try that tomo morning Smile
