Dog food challenge help

So my picky little fuckers have decided that actually they aren’t keen on certain dog kibbles

They used to happily eat se7en and pooch & mutt but now won’t.

My requirements:-

+Have to be small bite kibble
+No fish (they don’t like it)
+No sweet potato (they don’t like it)
+Not overly herby (they don’t like it)
+Needs to be a good decent quality kibble but ideally not one that will break the bank.

Help!

This is the best site to search, not least as it lists all the ingredients

www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk

I didn't realise kibble came in different sizes!

The brands I buy are Carnilove or AATU

Soubriquet · 25/06/2021 19:19

When you have a 2.5kg chihuahua, you realise you need smaller kibble Grin

Soubriquet · 25/06/2021 19:25

I have literally picked up bags of food and squeezed around to try and feel the size of the kibble

wetotter · 25/06/2021 19:29

I have a small breed, but roughly twice the weight of yours!! Grin

Might it be worth trying puppy kibble?

Do you feed wet as well?

wetotter · 25/06/2021 19:33

Oh, and cross Carnilove off the list, it's quite big.

Soubriquet · 25/06/2021 19:37

They have butchers wet food. The one in the trays not the tins. That always goes down well.

A lot of dog companies make small breed now but I guess puppy would be a way to go

My bigger girl is still a chihuahua but she’s a bigger one at just over 6kgs but it’s easier to feed them both the same food which is why I’m just looking for small bite

FlamingGoat · 25/06/2021 19:39

I use Burns toy and small breed food.
They love it.

Billybagpuss · 25/06/2021 19:42

It might not tick the last box, but we use canagan, amazing quality and how on earth do you know they don’t like sweet potato?

Soubriquet · 25/06/2021 19:42

Will look at it! Thank you

I've got a 4.9kg mini dachshund and he's on Arden Grange Mini Adult. He will eat big kibble but makes a hell of a mess with it, yanks them out of the bowl and crunches them up all over the house. Got a border collie on the adult senior light Arden Grange, very happy with both. It's not-dear-not-cheap and has prebiotics, glucosamine, chondroitin (sp!) etc. and the first two ingredients are meat :)

Soubriquet · 25/06/2021 19:49

I used to feed Arden grange to my old Jack Russell but then discovered he was allergic to grains, chicken, beef, grass and various other foods

I did a lot of research at the time and they all said grain free was best so I do try to avoid things with rice and grains in it, but now I’m just determined to find them a kibble they will eat and see how they go from there digestive wise

I have a picky bloody princess and what she likes is variety. She'll eat a kibble with wet food happily for weeks, I'll open a new bag and suddenly... Nah, don't fancy that.

Bloody exasperating as the other two eat with the enthusiasm of a Dyson sucking up dust.

Floralnomad · 25/06/2021 19:55

Have you tried small breed Applaws

Soubriquet · 25/06/2021 19:56

No I haven’t. I’ll have a look at it

OP posts:
Kleptronic · 25/06/2021 20:21

Oh sorry I didn't realise you didn't want grains :)

Soubriquet · 25/06/2021 20:22

It’s ok. I realised I didn’t post that in my OP

Royal Canin have kibble by breed. I feed my pug puppy Royal Canin pug puppy food and he loves it. He is very picky as well and doesn’t like the more healthy kibble/fish/vegetables etc. (but would eat horse poo/ stones/cigarette buds/dirt etc from the floor Hmm)

Soubriquet · 25/06/2021 20:39

I had a look at royal canin because they have a chihuahua specific food and the ingredient list is rubbish

Meat is so far down and comes after all the grains and rice.

Eden comes up high on that website but I’ve only ever bought medium.

butterry · 25/06/2021 20:44

I used Orijen small breed before switching to raw

CarrieMoonbeams · 25/06/2021 20:51

I've used Eden in the past when I had an unbelievably fussy dog, she ate that more often than not. Not sure about the size of the kibble though.

That site wetotter linked to is brilliant.

Billybagpuss · 25/06/2021 21:35

@Billybagpuss

It might not tick the last box, but we use canagan, amazing quality and how on earth do you know they don’t like sweet potato?
Also my SIL has a chihuahua, and it follows be around when we visit as we use the canagan kibble as training tidbits too.
Jody21 · 27/06/2021 13:43

Can anyone recommend food that will bring back a healthy, glossy coat?

I have a very fussy border collie, he's really picky with his food. I have tried him with different brands but found he was only eating half of what I put out for him so I've changed about a few times. He currently has James wellbeloved grain free dry food (rec in pet shop) mixed with half a tray of wet food. He eats it most days but I have noticed that when I brush him his coat is very dull and dry looking and he has dandruff too.

What can I tempt him with that's going to give him a nice healthy coat and put a bit of shine back in it?

Takingabreakagain · 27/06/2021 13:52

@Jody21 have you tried raw food? My dogs coats were dry and dull but since they've had raw food they are soft and shiny. If you can find a raw food stockist near you they can advise so you get the right mix of food. Or a good website is the one for Dog's Diner - they have a shop in Moreton on the Wirral
