Puppy doorbell for toilet training

Hello,

I'm interested in getting a puppy doorbell! Puppy is brilliant at sitting by door to be let outside. She's fab! However, on the few occasions the kids have been in charge, they've not noticed... and then pup has done a wee on the floor. Pup sits in silence by back door. She can be vocal at other times... just not when wanting outside!

I think pup would be easily trained to use a doorbell. But not sure of good brands.

Thanks!

I think anything the pup can reach and jingle? So just a bunch of largish bells on the end of a ribbon round the door handle is what we use.

Our trainer told us not to use bells for that reason! Especially when you go to leave them. Just learn to take them out as often as they need so they learn to hold until you deal with it. Ie don’t teach them to ask - preempt!

I bought a trio of jingle bells on a turquoise ribbon from a pet shop for my Lab to learn to ring them to go out. My Lab is clever but she won’t ring the bell. My little spaniel (a notoriously less than clever breed) has learnt to ring it without instruction!

Wow, if that’s now a thing, how brilliant (and Gospodin Pavlov no doubt would have thought) obvious.

Two of our cats leap at the door handle when they need to go (double glazing, can’t install flap without big expense). No doubt whatsoever that they would use a bell. Off to investigate …..

My 5 month old Staffie uses bells, he has a long set that hang from the door , he rings them when he wants out, I started at 8 weeks old and by 10 weeks he was using them constantly and hasn't had a accident since 10 weeks old in the house

I leave him now for 2-3 hours in the kitchen alone when out and he never had a accident so I don't think the ringing bells has caused a issue like previous poster said

It's very handy and I recommend it personally

He picked it up super quickly I just used a you tube video on what to do and it worked

Thank you. Very interesting that simple bells work. And very interesting what the PP said about pre-empting. And then the Stafford pup who uses bells and hasn't had accidents...!!!

Hmmm - lots to think about.

Thank you one and all!!!

I was very attracted to the idea of using toilet bells before I got my puppy but after reading different viewpoints, I decided that I didn't want to be at the beck and call of the bells. Instead, I taught a command word for going for a wee so that I could encourage Ddog to go when it was convenient to us. For example, I'll take him outside for a wee before we sit down to eat, watch TV, go on a zoom call or before we go in the car so that I know he doesn't need to toilet (he might still try and get my attention for play, but at least I'm not worried about ending up with a puddle).

Also, it works really well for going to other locations, because as long as I take him outside at regular intervals and give the toileting command, I don't have to worry about him going inside someone else's house.

We got the long bells on a ribbon from Pets at Home and puppy mastered them within days. A year on and he still uses them, although sometimes he uses them just cos he wants to go out and play!

We used bells initially and it worked well. Always went out with him, used a hand signal (finger drawing a circle) and say quickly - we wanted to teach a command to see so he goes before going into someone’s house etc. He’s a year now and we don’t use bells as he comes and sits and stares at you until you say “do you need wee?” And he looks very happy so you then take him. He seems to have “i need a wee” eyes.
