Our gorgeous ex-racer girl joined the family yesterday Smile

She seems to be settling in really well. She had a good night's sleep and no accidents in the house so far.

Everyone says routine is very important for greys, but I'm not sure what kind of pattern to aim for.
Could you tell me about your routine?

I can’t offer any advice, but she is beautiful!

Ouchiehelpneeded · 20/06/2021 20:18

Thanks @Tangled22, she is very pretty. Tall and elegant, unlike everyone else in the house, sadly Wink

Lovely girl :-) Our boy was eight when we took him on (very successful ex-racer and then used for breeding, then dumped). There were a few months of thinking 'I've done the wrong thing'. I couldn't get past losing our Italian Greyhound boy to cancer. We've had rescues since 1997, and they've overlapped, but that death really hit me hard and I didn't think I could do it again. I came back to it by wanting to take a dog of an age that often are left to languish in kennels. I distinctly remember the time I said to our current boy, 'I do really love you - I didn't but I do now'.

My only advice is take the time to see what works for your girl. All our adopted dogs have been idiots in their own ways but, by taking the time to work them out, we've always come to love them for their unique traits. Once a Greyhound lover, always a sighthound lover. I couldn't imagine a life without a slob on the bed.

She’s gorgeous. I don’t have anything to offer on routine - I am just here for her photo.

Also, I am collecting my own sighthound today (whippet cross lurcher) so following for interest.

I have lurchers rather than greyhounds, and apart from being fed at 7am and 7pm we don't have a routine. Ddog2 would love one, as he is an anxious soul and tries very hard to make his own rules about how things are done, but its not good for him as he locks into it and then gets more anxious when it can't happen for whatever reason.
My foster puppies I do have a bedtime routine for, but really short just to help them get to settle.
If she's sleeping and toileting fine, then just do what suits you best. She is gorgeous btw, I love a black greyhound

I have a greyhound-lurcher (she looks very greyhound but with a fluffy tail) she does love routine and predictability

I walk her before I feed her (she’s not into food, and I need her to work up an appetite first)

7am: let her into the garden for a mooch
She then goes back to sleep
8am: walk of about 40 mins-1 hr
9am: back home, breakfast
She then lounges/sleeps, just lies next to me (maybe occasionally sticking her nose in my armpit to say “hi”) until 3pm or do (I can easily leave her alone for 2-3 hrs)
3pm: let her into garden for a wee/mooch
5:30: dinner
5:40 zoomies!!!!! she does mad loops and throws toys in the air and rolls around with happiness. This lasts about 10 mins
7:00 30 minute walk
7:30: back to sleep

Obviously there are days where things are a bit different. On the whole I find her an extremely undemanding dog, and she loves this routine

Hope your doggo settles in well Grin

She is a beaut! I’ve had one ex racer (via RSPCA), parents have had two (sequentially, through Clark Farm Greyhound rehoming). Also various lurchers. I have to say they’ve all been different, although it takes a while for them to really show their personalities and settle down to life as a pet.
They’ve all been very clean dogs in the house, HATED going out in the rain, and very good on the lead. Variable prey drive. Like all dogs with narrow “twists”, it’s best to feed two half-sized meals a day - in kennels she’s probably only had one big feed.
Otherwise the “thirty MPH couch potato” stereotype was pretty accurate!

What a beauty!
I have a 3/4 greyhound but have had rescues in the past. Normally a bit older so much lazier than my current lurcher who is 14 months.
The long days have thrown the routine out a bit but normally he gets a walk (he has a wolfhound friend he runs with most mornings) from 7am to 8.30 am. Breakfast and nap until about 11 ish. A bit of a play until a light lunch (eg a tin of sardines) and then mooch around destroying toys etc until about 2pm. Shorter walk 2-3 unless it is too hot (normally 23C is the limit of heat) More mooching, playing and napping until dinner at 5pm. Then some calm time and he'll sleep on and off until 9.30 when I will take him out for a wee and the he sleeps on (sometimes in) the bed with me and DH.

DDog is the most cat-like dog I have ever had (unless he meets an actual cat) and I do think he understands everything. Sighthounds are really finely balanced and so weather that's a bit hotter, a walk that's just a tiny bit too tiring, a room that's just a little bit too noisy etc will disproportinately affect them.

One of my greys can tell the time better than big ben! She appears by my side on the dot for breakfast and dinner. Three walks a day fit in around that, a short one after breakfast, longer one at midday, and then a variable length one after our dinner, depending on the weather on how they are feeling. The rest of the time they are asleep or listening out for snacks.

I'm on this thread purely for the photos. Your dogs are absolutely beautiful @Ouchiehelpneeded @MrsSkrebensky !
I'm planning to get a rescue greyhound next year when I've moved house, I love them. They have such gentle natures.

Definitelyrandom · 22/06/2021 13:08

Ours is a 4 year old retired racing greyhound and we've had him a year. He's actually fairly relaxed about timings, so breakfast is anything from 7.30 to 10, walk is late morning to late lunch (though he gets the hump if it's later than that), second walk 5-7 at this time of year, tea 6-8, depending on when his walk was. Shoots in to the kitchen from the other side of the house as soon as he hears/smells meat coming out of the fridge for our dinner. Lurks about, then lies on his duvet looking hopeful while we have dinner. Goes to bed upstairs when we do. Sleeps a lot in between times......
