Getting a rescue dog who wees in house any advice?

We are taking on a four year old male shih Tzu from the rescue home this week arriving on Thursday!
He has separation anxiety and his owner's gave him up because he has started doing wees all over house and they couldn't deal with it a long with his recent barking.
We have never owned a dog before so no experience but have been around lots of our families dogs and we do have two cats which rescue centre believe he'll be fine with.
After the first week we decide whether to adopt him which I think we are definitely going to do but having just renovated the house before lockdown I'm worried about destroying decor and the smell!! Any advice on how to deal with the wee problem welcome!! TIA

Treat him like a puppy.

Outside every 30 minutes and after food, drink, play, sleep, training and walks. Also, I would invest in some Simple Solution (a special pet enzyme cleaner) to clean up any accidents.

If the accidents are caused by separation anxiety and you're home most of the time, you may find he doesn't mess much - but you do need to get him used to being alone at times. It's not healthy for him (or you) for him to never have any time on his own.

My advice- don't do it! His anxiety will worsen in the interim. He WILL piss in the house, repeatedly and it will take a long time to get him out of it, if ever.

A first dog with anxiety issues is a recipe for disaster. It will be kinder if this dog goes to more experienced owners. How old are your children?

@cupsofcoffee good advice thanks I'll try the frequent garden trips for the toilet
@LEMtheoriginal youngest child is 12 the other two are teenagers, it's their wish to have the dog!!
We have it for temporary fostering for one week to see how it goes so we are not committed to the dog by any means but I have a feeling we will all fall in love with him but we have a choice so we'll see!?

I did shih tzu rescue years ago and have had 8 of my own over the years. You may find he's fine in a new environment, but yes treat him like a puppy and watch him like a hawk. Outside every half hour to cock his leg etc. Can you make life easier for yourselves by keeping him in the hard floor areas of your house.

It may be that your environment suits him better than the one he's come from and there won't be many accidents, but, being honest they are not the cleanest of dog breeds and prone to doing protest wees. Shut your bedroom doors if you go out as nothing worse than coming home and going to bed to find the bloody dog has pissed right in the middle of the duvet and it's soaked through everything down to the mattress.

For cleaning up the wee - biological washing powder and when dry, dab with meths.

Your kids will be old enough to recognise when dog needs space.

I hope it works out for you

Thanks everyone for great advice, luckily the only carpet I have in the house is on the stairs and landing.
I'm hoping it works out but I can see he will need to be treated like a puppy at least for a while, he will be out in the garden every thirty minutes and after food and water.
There must be some happy shih tzu owners who've had this problem and solved it I'm sure, I'd like to give the little guy a chance.
Any other tips welcome 🙏🏻

Our rescue often wee's in the house and in the end we put her in nappies when we weren't able to watch her constantly as she would we on any soft furnishings or carpet. We use washable nappies then take her out regularly to go to the toilet.

@Titsywoo Does your dog still wee now? Nappies that's a new one on me! Nappies for dogs or are you using baby nappies? I'm new to all this!
