Shih Tzu licking

My shih tzu has licked himself so much at the fleshy bit of skin between his body and hind leg that it's started to get a little bit sore. It's not infected or anything and I've put him into a suit we had for him when he had castrations surgery but any other suggestions?

Has he been checked by a vet?

JanetandJohn500 · 20/06/2021 09:43

No. Only noticed it yesterday and he hasn't licked it at all since (although was alone overnight).
Seems a bit better today but very lazy. I'll keep an eye on it and take him to the vets if needed.

Could be allergy.
Could be a reaction to fleas.
Could be pain.
A vet check would be best.

My boy just had his boosters and i mentioned this as he does it sometimes too. The vet suggested it could be boredom and to wear him out. He does it much more now we have children.

Did the vet check him for pain before giving this advice? If it's not caused by something physical, it could be caused by anxiety or OCD (rather than boredom), which could be made worse by activities that increase his adrenaline levels, such as playing fetch.

I do think it's anxiety, he got quite sore in his armpit at one point so I bought him a lickimat soother and some toys to cuddle and he wore a top while it healed.
He still licks sometimes but not as much, it seems to be quite habital but the vet wasn't concerned at all. He was checked over thoroughly years ago and given a soothing shampoo but it made no difference.

Filthiest title I've ever read on Mumsnet...for no reason other than the sound of it.

You know when you get an ingrown hair or a flea bite that really bugs you and you scratch till its red? It could be something similar.
Be ready to check in with vet
