What to do with dog when you go out in the evening?

Not that life is opening up again. Evening invites are starting to crop up.
Normally when we are home dog is sleepy by 8ish out for last wee around 1030 then into crate for night.

He sleeps happily in crate and will happily go into it for 3 hours during day if needed.

We are due to go out next sat. From 7 until 11 ish.

I can't put him in crate at 7 until the morning and out for a wee on our return.

What do you all do for evening outs??

It's a bit different as ours sleeps on the bed so he isn't in a crate overnight.

If we are out for a couple of hours at night I make sure he has had a tiring day and leave him to sleep on the sofa with the radio on.

For a long night like yours I have to say I pay for someone to sit with him. I am sure he would be perfectly ok for four hours but he isn't left often at night and I can go out and enjoy myself without worrying.

WouldBeGood · 19/06/2021 13:03

I just leave mine, always have. Never any problems. Mine just sleep on the furniture til I return.

Lazypuppy · 19/06/2021 13:05

Just leave him in the house. Either we let him have full access, or limit him to downstairs. He normally just sleeps on the sofa while we are out. We've never used a crate, and qt night when we are home he has full access to the whole house

Lazypuppy · 19/06/2021 13:06

If you are out 7-11, why wouldn't you let him out for a wee when you get home? Its only 4hours. Why would you wait til the morning?

PlasticDashboardJesus · 19/06/2021 13:07

If it’s longer than a couple of hours we have to make sure one of the kids are home, arrange for someone else to stay with the dogs or we don’t go.

MaMaD1990 · 19/06/2021 13:07

My parents just let the dog out for a wee before they go, put the radio or TV on for company, let out for a wee when they come home and off to bed.

Floralnomad · 19/06/2021 13:08

Unless you plan to spend a couple of hours up with the dog when you get home I think you need to leave him out of his cage and then just pee and bed when you get home . It’s not an issue here as we don’t use a cage so our dog just does as he pleases if we go out , which generally means he goes upstairs to bed .

Figgygal · 19/06/2021 13:09

I’d just let him out when get home

Munkeyface · 19/06/2021 13:24

Think my worry is if we are a bit tipsy on our return the last thing I want to have to face is a excited dog!

Alternista · 19/06/2021 13:29

I have no idea what the issue here is!
Just let the dog out when you get back?!

Inthesameboatatmo · 19/06/2021 13:32

I think you are making an issue when there isnt one.
Let the dog out before you go and let it out when you get back ,what's the problem, if you cant handle an excited dog after a few drinks you shouldn't have got the dog tbh.

BiteyShark · 19/06/2021 13:32

Are you worried about being too drunk to take him out and settle him?

How old is he and have you ever left him at night before?

I love coming home after a good evening and then being greeted with a happy dog Grin

LadyCatStark · 19/06/2021 13:36

We haven’t yet, but I’d leave our dog from 7-11. He’s sleepy by 7:30 anyway. I’d make sure he’d had a good walk before we went and his tea and he’d sleep til 11. We’d definitely let him out for a wee at 11 though but I don’t think he’d be excitable at that time, he usually gets up for his last wee at 11 anyway and is still sleepy. I’d be expecting a slightly early morning wake up call though!

bellabride · 19/06/2021 13:36

Go to a dog friendly pub?

SpaceRaiders · 19/06/2021 13:44

Big walk in the afternoon. Plenty of play, sniffing games outside, feed and water him a couple of hours before I head out. Pop him outside for a quick pee on your return. Simple.

My 10 month old pup is generally content with being left and we’ve not had any issues. Although I usually get a look of utter disapproval when I come home and force him outside in the rain.

tabulahrasa · 19/06/2021 13:46

I’d make sure he was all sorted and tired before going and then let him out when I got back, and hang out with him till he settled back down again - so after going out I don’t just go straight to bed, I stay up a bit, usually only takes half an hour.

cupsofcoffee · 19/06/2021 14:08

Just leave him to do whatever he normally does in the evening? I leave mine in the living room with the TV on and he sleeps on the sofa under his blankets.

Eleoura · 19/06/2021 14:11

Is it a small dog? Get a doggy door!

If not, why can't the dog stay in the house, or a utility area?

Frenchfancy · 19/06/2021 14:15

Leaving the dog is no issue, like everyone says just take them out for a wee when you get home. I'm more concerned about the crate 7pm to 7am with just one wee visit means 12 hours in a crate. But then I don't really like dogs in crates.

ivgotskelitons · 19/06/2021 14:17

Crate him as you leave the door and let him out when you're back? I don't see the big deal... I crate one of my dogs as she chews every single thing she can see still so I can't take the risk, but If Iv ever gone out for a few hours this is never an issue. They are in the crate whilst I'm in bed? Isn't any different

MrsBungle · 19/06/2021 14:20

I just leave mine in the living room with the tv on.

Chocolateandamaretto · 19/06/2021 17:02

We'd just leave him downstairs and let him out to pee when we got home. He doesn't sleep in a crate normally though. You'd have to do that if you got any sort of sitter in anyway - even if just one of us goes out to the pub or whatever and everyone else is home and goes to bed normally he'd still want his goodnight cuddle when the other one gets in and we'd take him out for a wee then.

Surely you'd have to be quite drunk not to manage taking the dog into the garden??

tabulahrasa · 19/06/2021 19:27

“Surely you'd have to be quite drunk not to manage taking the dog into the garden??”

Wouldn’t recommend it, and I wouldn’t plan to, but I’ve done pee walks round the block at 3am, where I’m pretty glad the dog knew the way because I was that drunk, rofl.

So I mean letting them in the garden should be do-able.
