Puppy with hernia?

DH is keen on a certain breed. After 12 mths of research we have found a breeder with a puppy and have made the puppy list!
The breeder (first time) seems very genuine and honest. Puppies are now 4 weeks and they have contacted us to say they think the puppy they ere thinking of for us has a hernia. How big a deal is this? What's the chance it resolves itself and if it doesn't what would be the likely cost of a procedure to resolve it? We are due to view the puppy in 2 weeks.

Depends on the hernia. I bought a puppy with a hernia and the breeder paid for it to be fixed before he came home to us. They kept him until he was about 16 weeks old. No other issues his entire life, he was the perfect pet.

I would have a chat with what would be your vet if you got the puppy.

How are you finance wise because anything related to the hernia for a lot of pet insurance providers wouldn't be covered for the lifetime of the dog.

Our puppy had an umbilical hernia. The breeder paid for the surgery and kept her and cared for her a little longer to make sure she was ok. She was fine and we took her home at 10.5 weeks our vet confirmed all had healed well and at 17 weeks now her scar is barely noticeable and she has no issues. @BiteyShark is correct though that insurers won't cover anything related to it, we are with pet plan and have taken out lifetime insurance etc but the hernia is classed as a precaution existing condition and isn't included.

Some puppies won't need surgery if the hernia is small it can fix itself or be dealt with at the same time you get the puppy neutered but our breeder wanted to do it so they could make sure she was perfectly well and recovered before going to her new home. I looked up how much the surgery is and it varies depending on the location of the hernia and it's size as sometimes it's a more complex procedure but it's likely a couple of hundred pounds as they need anaesthesia and aftercare too.

Pre existing not precaution!
