Puppy jumping off sofa and stairs

We have a 4 month old puppy that now knows what a sofa and stairs are. She knows she’s not allowed on either and we spend all our time with her on the floor playing so she doesn’t feel like she’s missing out.
She has her odd mad moments when she’s obsessed with jumping on and off the sofa, but I can’t get to her fast enough to lift her off so she’s constantly jumping onto hard slippy floor, same with the stairs (know matter who’s house the stairs are at) she has this obsession with jumping off the last few. It’s giving me total anxiety that it’s not good for her joints and even that it could end badly for her and she could really hurt herself. Any advice? We do the usual not encouraging her on the sofa and praising when she has all four paws on the ground.

As you have said this is really bad for puppies joints so does need to be prevented.

I would get a stairgate or shut doors so your puppy can not get to the stairs. If you are coming down the stairs put them on a lead to prevent the jumping if you do not want a stair gate.

Re the sofa again I would prevent access to that room unless supervised. If she is having a mad puppy moment go out of the room and play in an area where she can not jump on furniture.

Also concentrate on calm games in the sitting room, so licky mats and natural chews, kongs might help to prevent the crazies kicking in.

It is very very important to prevent jumping activities at this age so worth putting in some effort to prevent it.

God I'm having the exact same issue with sofas at mo, we have two sofas in our front room kind of L shaped as though it were a corner sofa but with a gap in between and sneaky pup has started racing into the front room and jumping on one sofa and when I say off she looks at me then jumps across to the other sofa and I swear she's grinning at me taunting me! She is not allowed on the sofas at all so I guess it's like forbidden fruit and she is an opportunist. Not sure how to stop it as she clearly thinks it's a game and is doing it for attention!

You need to puppy-proof your home a bit more - it's similar to having a toddler.

So, a baby gate across the stairs so she can't access them, and another across the room where the sofas are so she can't go in there unsupervised.

If you don't want her on the furniture at all then you're going to need to make the floor a really appealing place to be - nice comfy dog beds, chews and toys for her to plan with etc.

Dogs like being on sofas because, well, sofas are soft and comfortable Grin obviously it's your choice not to let her up but I know many people who have tried and failed in this regard!

Or, they don't let the dog on the sofa and the dog complies quite happily until the owners go out! Wink

@cupsofcoffee yes this is my pup I went out the front to get something from the car and as soon as I shut the door pup was up on the sofa trying to look out of the window!

She doesn't seem to like any dog beds unfortunately, she prefers to lay on the floor?! She goes in her crate at night and sleeps on a crate mattress in there happily but when I've tried putting the mattress in front room she won't go on it, nor either of the dog beds we have! She will "settle" on a blanket with a toy or chew if I ask her to eg while we go in the kitchen to eat but she seems to then look for another area to lay just on the carpet instead?
