Very young puppy possible kennel cough? (9 weeks)

Has anyone had a very young puppy with kennel cough?

I collected our new addition on Saturday, she had had her first injection and the breeder said that 'her little cough' was likely a reaction to the injection.

I now have my doubts. I've owned many dogs in the past and she has symptoms of kennel cough.

I phoned the vet yesterday rather than taking her in as I have a broken ankle and as she's eating fine we are adopting a watch and wait approach. The vet said they don't like to medicate very young dogs anyway.

I've done something stupid and googled and every site talks about complications such as pneumonia with very young pups. I'm assuming the vet is right and not to worry unless she goes off food or becomes lethargic - that is what I would do with older dogs but wondering whether I should be panicking more.

I'm also pretty cheesed off with the breeder they didn't tell me about the cough in advance of my 2.5 hour journey to collect her. I would have still wanted her I would just have asked to wait to collect until we were sure cough OK. The breeder also knew I was getting a lift because of broken ankle.

Has anyone had experience with such a young puppy with KC. Any words of wisdom or reassurance would be appreciated.

I am no medic and this may be irrelevant but has the puppy been wormed?

lifeturnsonadime · 17/06/2021 17:33

yes full worming history. I went through it with the vet yesterday.

Thats good one less thing to worry about.

We have had kennel cough in a rescue litter and the puppies were all fine. Off colour for a bit and a huge worry but they all did ok.

Yes I would have thought the breeder would have kept the puppies until they were 100%.

I hope your little guy is feeling better soon.

Thank you Polly. It is a worry, she was a bit off the day before yesterday which is why I called vet. Much better yesterday and a bit off again today. Nothing I'd particularly worry for with older dogs but she's just so young.

It's just not nice having a poorly puppy when I'm not great myself. Added complication!

Yes all you need right now!

If you are worried are there local dog ambulances that could run her into the vet for you?

lifeturnsonadime · 17/06/2021 17:54

no idea, I'll have a look. I'd just jump into a cab if needs be though or do a call out.

Feel so sorry for the little mite, it's such a big thing coming to a new home without feeling ill. It's also a shame because new puppies are normally such fun. She's having moments of showing her personality but it's not really shining through yet.. Fingers crossed she recovers quickly.

What does the breeder say? The rest of the litter will have it.

lifeturnsonadime · 18/06/2021 14:14

the Breeder is saying no kennel cough, this is definitely KC. She hasn't been anywhere other than here or at the breeder to catch it. We don't have it here!

Still coughing but not as bad as yesterday & a bit more lively.

Just to give a counter view... my dog did have a reaction to the kennel cough vaccine that gave him a cough. It's a live vaccine so it's possible that it is a reaction. I took him back to the vets who diagnosed it as a vaccine side effect and prescribed an anti inflammatory. My dog was better after a few days.

Fingers crossed your pup feels better soon.

Poor pup. You know the 'breeder' is lying to you, right?
