My brain is a whir - already have a 7 ye old dog and can't remember what you do!

She is a shih poo and 10 weeks old already - it's a family friend and an accidental pairing - so I know the current owners - all fine.

Please help!

What is a ship poo?

But you should see both parents.
Go with your gut.

Shitzu x toy poodle.

They have mum at home - dad was an accidental pairing. Though he is a family friend too

How old is the puppy going to be when you take it home (if you decide to go ahead)?

I would want to know what the breeder has done to socialise the puppy and how they plan to continue to socialise her until she is rehomed.

I just can't remember what you need?

Crate, bedding, food, food and water bowls - basically all the things my dog has - but anything else!??

Puppies are a bloody nightmare. Exhausting, delightful, playful, messy, charming - hard work but worth it.

See puppy with mum and litter mates (it's nice to see the sire, but seeing the dam is more important IMHO).
Prepare to settle the puppy in - intro to existing dog on neutral ground.
Get you brain in gear for house training.
Make sure you have all the kit you need (bowl, food, lead, collar, bedding)
Book a vet appointment for first vaccinations.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 15/06/2021 20:30

Oh, some toys - stuff the puppy can chew rather than stuff you don't want it to chew.

permaconfused · 15/06/2021 20:39

I thought about neutral ground but where, can't be outside, as pup too young?

We need photos

We need photos
Yes, this is the essential thing!

Never mind buying stuff for the puppy start by removing your own stuff from anywhere the puppy will be/can reach.
If you have furniture you want to protect cover the legs with something.
If you don't already store shoes somewhere enclosed start.
Bins need closing lids, as do laundry hampers.
Any plants within reach of pup check are not poisonous for dogs.
Likewise puppy proof your garden.
When you've all that done start thinking about what you need for the pup 😂

permaconfused · 15/06/2021 21:26

Done all that - we have an escape artist for a dog already and she's still into everything - the house is naughty dog proofed - the garden may need tiny holes sealed until this dog is bigger. Will do that tomorrow.

Puppy proof your house
Find out as much as possible too

A friend's garden? That's what we've done in the past.

The friend can even have a dog, as long as it is vaccinated and stays out of the intro.

There's a really good guide to this on the Facebook Group Dog Training Advice and Support. Join it - it's great.

But it's about giving the older dog space where they can be away from the puppy and have grown up time. Puppies irritate the hell out of most older dogs - and while they get a lot of leeway till they are about 6 months even the nicest tempered dog is going to get pissed off at some point!
