New miniature dashund puppy

Hello looking for advice, my daughter has a new puppy nine weeks old collected him tonight. She's just FaceTimed me and I can hear puppy crying. She is upstairs with her boyfriend. She says everyone told her to not give in and let puppy cry as she doesn't want puppy in bedroom ( her boyfriend is a police officer works shifts and needs his sleep) I think she should sleep downstairs for a few nights to be with puppy? Any advice ? Thankyou

I agree with not letting the puppy upstairs. Their legs won’t be upto it yet anyway but yes, sleeping downstairs for the first few nights at least is usual with a puppy. Is it their first one? Is puppy in a crate? Does he have some home comforts with him from mum?

Nikki360 · 07/06/2021 00:23

Hi Thankyou yes it's their first puppy and he's in his crate. He has a blanket from his mum. She was worried if she sleeps downstairs he will want that every night but I agree she should at least for a few nights. He must be so bewildered 😕

Yes, it’s a baby that has just been plucked from the only home and family it’s ever known. Of course she should be downstairs with it.

Checkingout811 · 07/06/2021 00:24

Oh bless him, he will be frightened. He’s known nothing other than his mum, siblings & first home his whole life so far.
Have you mentioned to her about someone staying downstairs with him?
Poor baby, I hope they go down to him.

DeathByWalkies · 07/06/2021 00:28

She needs to go downstairs and sleep on the sofa next to the puppy. This is a puppy which, in the space of a few hours, has lost his home, his mum and his siblings. It's unsurprising that the puppy cannot cope with being left alone.

Right now, the puppy is learning that being left alone is a bad, scary thing. That's not great - you don't want to set the puppy up for a lifetime of separation anxiety.

Not wanting the puppy in the bedroom is a perfectly legitimate decision (especially during toilet training!), but FWIW, my DP also works nightshifts and so sleeps in the day. DDog (dachshund cross, but an adult) can usually be found snoozing in on the bed with him and it doesn't affect his sleep. If the doorbell goes DDog will bark and wake him up, but that would be the case no matter whether he was in bed or not.

I agree with you. She should sleep downstairs with puppy for a few nights until he settles into his new environment. Poor puppy 😞

Nikki360 · 07/06/2021 00:36

Are we taking bets on how long before she comes hone from work to them both snoring on the bed? 😁

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 07/06/2021 00:45

Tell your daughter to join this Facebook group and read alllll the puppy units as soon as she can. It will set them both up for success.

I’m just here for the pics! He will be feeling a bit scared and missing his mum/siblings. It will take time for him to settle and get used to his new life and routine. Lost of love and cuddles - but also rules!

It’s dachshund - literally “floor dog” in German.

XelaM · 14/06/2021 00:57

@Warmduscher Dach is ceiling in German

XelaM · 14/06/2021 00:58

Oops 😬 I meant "roof". Anyway ignore me 😂

AlwaysLatte · 14/06/2021 01:03

We don't want dogs in our bedrooms either but I slept downstairs with our puppy at first. Night time is a scary and lonely time for a new puppy.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 14/06/2021 07:13

They are cute - I’ve seen quite a few around here recently.

Dachs means "badger" Confused

Dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 14/06/2021 07:30

I always thought it meant roof dog but couldn’t figure out why! I used to all them weasel-hounds when I was little (works kind of with a German accent).

No - ignore me! I was told this years ago and always believed it as it made perfect sense to call a dog that had been bred to have very short legs a “floor dog”.

Definitely not a dash hound though, as so many people call them.
