Will DDog be sad?

We are away for half term. Dsis kindly looked after DDog but her DD has just tested positive for covid so now we are not getting him for another 10 days or so. We were due to get him tomorrow. My parents offered to take him, because they had both covid jabs ages ago. But we are not going to collect him from their house until 10 days is up as we have only had 1 jab and DNeice was doing lots of dog walking and cuddles. Parents offered to do this (I would not have asked). There will be no person to person contact with DSis’s household when they collect the dog. I have also bought new collar, lead, harness etc. I’m worried he will feel abandoned or not remember us when we get him. He has never been away before although I think he was enjoying his time with Dsis as they have a dog. We have had him since March 2020 (rescue dog). Could someone reassure me please? Please be gentle…I’ve been very worried about covid throughout the pandemic. That is why I took my folks up on their offer.

I'd get him as planned. You could give use a dry dog shampoo (like a kind of shaving foam) to wash him without needing water (just a towel to wipe it off), but catching Covid by touch is now not considered a risk in the same way it was a year ago because we know more about how it's transmitted.

NeilBuchananisBanksy · 04/06/2021 14:53

I'd just get him tbh.

Scattyhattie · 04/06/2021 15:10

Dogs tend to live in the moment so while maybe unsettled by a change they probably aren't dwelling on it like a human and presumably already knows your parents.

I'd just go and collect personally if can do a hand over in the garden and use spare lead. My dog walker had client with covid they walked for and just followed the industry guidance. Think it's now been shown low risk of transmission from surface, fur etc

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 04/06/2021 15:16

I think he will be fine if he's happy with your Dsis, dogs don't know you will be 2 weeks or whatever they are either happy from the start or sad at first then get used to new place. So if he is happy now he should stay happy and that makes it seem like he is a happy, laidback kind of dog who will also be happy to get home

tabulahrasa · 04/06/2021 15:51

Well they can’t walk him if they’re having to self isolate... so I’d just go get him, wipe him down as you get him.

mrsknottschicken · 04/06/2021 20:08

Thanks all, no they are not walking him - he is being let out in the garden with the other dog (who he likes very much). They are not leaving the house at all. Appreciate probably risk low but I’ve tied myself up in knots (and guilt) about/with it all now!

You are massively over thinking this. Just collect the dog as planned, if you're really just worried give him a bath. I'd be far more worried about the lack of walks than the risk of covid!

321zyx · 04/06/2021 20:19

That should read....'if you're really worried just'.....

oneglassandpuzzled · 04/06/2021 20:24

I think this is overkill but this is the kind of thing you could use with gloves to clean him before you get him into the car

MissyB1 · 04/06/2021 20:26

Just go and get your dog. He is not going to bring Covid to your house!

GiveMeNovocain · 04/06/2021 20:27

When we had to isolate I passed our pup to my parents without any contact so drove him to their house, attached to hook outside with bag of food etc and they collected him once I'd left. We didn't worry about the lead and bits as surface transmission is no longer considered an issue but I'm sure they washed their hands. Luckily pcr test was negative so we were released after a few days but she was much happier there while we waited for the result as she got walked. Could you collect from her garden?

Floralnomad · 04/06/2021 20:28

I’d just get him as planned

Keepitcleanplease · 04/06/2021 20:35

I would get him. I don't understand why you wouldn't. Even if you are high risk you have been vaccinated and he is a dog.

mrsknottschicken · 07/06/2021 11:39

Thanks for the responses. In case anyone else is in this situation in the future, we took vet advice in the end. Called our vet and also my sister's. The advice from both of them was for the dog to sit out quarantine with them. Risk is small but not nothing so both vets advised this. My sister has been invited to join a Public Health England study where she does lateral flow and PCR tests every day. If they are negative, she is allowed to go out of isolation for a 24-hr period until the next test. She feels a bit weird about it but is driving the dogs somewhere remote to walk where she won't see anyone. So dog is happy and being exercised as normal. I think this is the same study that Michael Gove is doing. My sister got randomly allocated into a group to do the daily tests.

How ridiculous. Most normal people wouldn’t be without their dog for 10 days for such a silly reason with such low risk, surely? Mad

cupsofcoffee · 08/06/2021 05:54

This is bonkers to me.

I really don't understand why you were happy leave your dog there without walks for ten days Confused surely you'd just pick him up from the garden and go about your life as normal?!

Tal45 · 08/06/2021 07:08

Your dog will remember you don't worry! And it sounds like he's pretty happy and laid back enjoying his time away. I'm sure he'll be excited to see you again though! Some dogs are very sensitive and really struggle with being moved around and other just settle right in.

jozipozi31 · 08/06/2021 07:18

Go and get the dog.

Spray/wipe him down or even bath him and leave him in the garden fir a couple of hours.

Don't kiss his fur etc - (!!) - just give him a bit of distance for a day or so.

Go and get him.

You wanted perspective - we are giving you it. Get him.

Have you actually read my posts? The dog is getting walks, as well as the company of another dog, and we are all following vet/PHE advice. Thanks for the judgement, though Hmm
