Puppy crate help!

Last night I didn’t sleep at all as six month old puppy decided he didn’t want to sleep in there. He’s done this a couple of nights now and I discovered my husband let him out - he (the dog) wanted to sleep in the bathroom.

He literally cried until 2am when we gave up (as needed sleep) and let him out. We obviously took him out for the odd wee break just in case and put some treats in there. I should add he has been sleeping a lot in the day and have been told not to walk him for a couple of days.

We never lock him in the crate in the day and he has always slept in there at night time until these last couple of days - he’s had a cold.

We are going away in a few days and he’s going to someone’s house to stay. He is prone to the odd accident when has complete free rein. Any tips to encourage him to return to his crate or an alternative please?

I just don’t know how to make him happier. X

Sorry lot of typos / grammar error.

The vet told us not to walk him as had a cold. Didn’t want to sleep in there = the crate.

I've heard lots of stories of puppies being fine sleeping in their crates for the first couple of months but then they start to become unsettled at night. The basic checklist seems to be:-
Is the crate in your bedroom? Dogs are social sleepers so Puppy might sleep better if closer to you.
Is the crate still big enough? Puppy might be getting too hot or want to stretch out a bit.
Is puppy being disturbed by garden/outside noises?

Technically is the correct size.
Good point - he does like to stretch out!

Puppy is outside mine and husband’s bedroom. I may try a pen and bed down there instead and he can try that. Thank you x

Thank you so much @QueenOfToast - puppy slept all night in the new arrangements (made a den with a court panel stair gate) and put his bigger bed in there! Really helpful advice. Flowers
