Puppy peeing on bed and in crate

I'm after some much needed advice. My 10 week old puppy has started to regularly pee in his crate and in his bed. Every time that he's in his crate his bed is either wet or he has peed on the floor of the crate. The main issue is that he is not bothered by it. He is not whining or crying to be let out, and last night he actually went into his crate and peed in his bed, then came out again!
His toilet training is going relatively well, with all poos outside and a few wee accidents in the house, but the majority are outside, as we regularly take him out.

We are sleeping downstairs with him, so that if he wakes we can quickly take him outside.
I am spraying enzymatic cleaner in his crate and on his bed then washing everything, but he just keeps doing it!

I've just come back from the school run to see the floor of the crate wet again, but he is snoozing happily! My son was checking on him every 2 mins, so he wasn't asking to be let out.

Help please! Is this something he will just grow out of?

I would take him out regularly and wait for him to wee. It is helpful if you can get them to wee on command as they get older, or a least know this is the wee stop so get on with it fairly quick. Don't leave pups with constant access to water but do offer it hourly during the day.

It may mean you are outside for a good half hour waiting but it is worth it.

Thanks, he regularly goes outside and is amazing at peeing on command, he pees almost as soon as we go outside, so that's not a problem. That's also what makes it so confusing as he is so good at asking to go out for a poo and with a wee we take him out very 30 mins or so and he always goes even when he doesn't really need to! Its just confusing as to why he wouldn't ask to come out of his crate, as he only seems to ask when he needs to poo.

Although he does have water left with him in his crate. Should i take this out?

I would take the water out as he will just drink it because it is there. As long as water is offered frequently it is fine.

Our adults dogs have a bowl in the porch that they have access to during the day if its warm but not at night. They ask to go out or for a drink and are sent out every hour or so. There is a bigger bowl of water outside and they drink out of that when they go outside. At night there is no access to water between 10pm and 6 am.

As your pup gets older you may be able to leave a bowl out.

Do not restrict his access to water .

Do not restrict his access to water.

Weeing in the bed can be an issue carried on from the breeders. If the breeder is not really quick to clean up the puppies area immediately then the dogs get used to living and weeing in their bed area. The breeder should set up an area for the puppies to use as soon as they are moving around. Even if it is in the puppy area but is should be a clear area for the puppies to move to.

You will just need to be very patient, clean the bed up everytime but also take the puppy out more. If he is weeing regularly more than once every 30 mins it may be worth mentioning to the vet.

What do you do when the puppy has weed inside?

Runizoomi · 28/05/2021 11:18

When he pees inside, we 'try' to ignore it, but just clean it up and use the spray, then we take him outside to see if he still needs to go. Part of me is wondering if he prefers the soft surface of the bed, although he pees on the floor of the crate as well!
I've taken his bed out just now and have just given him a blanket as that's easier to clean!
At the breeders they were in a large crate and had puppy pads all over the floor, so plenty space to go to the toilet.

Yep that is the problem though at the breeders when there were puppy pads everywhere. THe pads need to be in a smaller area of the puppy space.

Puppies as soon as they can move will begin to move a specific area to toilet. If they are are encouraged to do it anywhere, with the pads everywhere, they will be harder to train in your home. But they will get it Smile

Thanks, hopefully that's the problem, I know he's still a baby, guess i just need some patience!

Are you sure it’s wee and not him tipping his water bowl everywhere? Our 10 week old puppy is a nightmare for doing that!

Catsrus · 28/05/2021 15:37

He will not ask to be let out - he has little awareness of the peeing, in the same way a baby would just wet a nappy. You have to become alert to his signals - you will learn to spot when he's about to do a wee.

Take him outside and be prepared to do it regularly, stay there for a long time, as soon as he does a wee you give loads of praise.

You have to teach him to be aware of when he is going to wee - and teach him that he only gets any kind of reward and attention when he does it outside.

Flip it round in your brain, you are NOT teaching him to stop peeing in the crate - you ARE teaching him to pee outside for a reward. Forget about accidents - just do as you're doing and clean them up, no comment. Concentrate on teaching him to go outside.

Hearing dogs for deaf people teach their dogs to go to the toilet on the command "Hurry up". I don't teach mine to go on command, but even now, as adults, I take them outside during the evening and they inevitably do go - including the one that has to be carried from his spot on the sofa and plonked in the garden. 😎

Runizoomi · 28/05/2021 15:58

I did think that it was his water bowl to begin with, but then I caught him doing it, and when I took him outside after he'd had a sleep he only peed a little bit, but his bed was wet.
I am now upping the treats and praise when he goes outside. He is amazing whenever we take him out, he always does go, and almost always within a couple of mins, so I guess I just need to give him more time.
Thanks for all the advice.
