Insurance for new puppy

My eldest daughter and her boyfriend are getting a miniature dachshund in two weeks time. He will be 9 weeks old. Her friends dog is the Dad and another friend has the Mum. Puppies have been vet checked raised in the family home with children and well looked after. My question is what insurance should she be looking at ? I've had dogs in the past but it's a minefield now. Also is the pets at home vip puppy club any use ? I want her to get good insurance. Thankyou

We are with Petplan and they are excellent. Our vet is with them personally which I thought was a good sign. They’re not the cheapest but apparently lots of the ones which are cheaper initially ramp up their prices as they get older.

Whichever you go for, get lifetime cover, as this will cover anything they’re diagnosed with for life. Other policies would exclude an existing condition when you come to renew.

We’re with pet plan too, they are paying out for allergy injections at £90 a pop every 6 weeks. They are easy to deal with.

Bought by Many are good too

www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/do-you-need-pet-insurance This was useful especially the different types

The two most recommended on MN are PetPlan (which most vets are happy to deal direct with) and Bought By Many.

It's important to get lifetime cover with no per-condition limit. And I would say get at least £7k cover (more if you can comfortably afford it)

Mine are with Petplan

dementedpixie · 26/05/2021 08:21

My cover with BBM is £15k I think

Thankyou very much for the replies I really appreciate it. It's all very complicated!

PetPlan paid out £4000 for my dog's surgery without any questions whatsoever (only communicated directly with the vets). Excellent service

gingerandsmall · 26/05/2021 11:14

PetPlan are really good. Also the Kennel Club. They paid out 3 times in about 6 months for my clumsy Labrador!

MabelMoo23 · 27/05/2021 07:13

Don’t forget that Dachshunds can suffer with IVDD and the vet bills for surgery can be astronomical. Mini Daxies have something like a 25% chance in getting it.

Therefore get the highest possible cover you can get , preferably lifetime cover as well (as opposed to covered for year, then becomes a pre-existing condition) so you are prepared for it

Nikki360 · 04/06/2021 00:09

Thankyou very much really appreciate the advice

Yep, need at least £12K per year, and life cover for each new condition, esp due to IVDD (vet here). Spinal surgery is extremely costly!
