What’s going on in rescues right now?

Can someone tell me what the state of play is with rescues right now?

I read that rescues are over-flowing and they are desperate for fosterers. Next I read that there are more people looking for dogs than ever before. What’s going on?

@Happenchance I don’t agree. We and many others are very happy with our two dogs from there. But you have made up your mind so I won’t labour my point.

I thought I should update you all and thank you for advice. I am going to collect a dog tomorrow.

It’s a private rescue - owner can’t cope with dog due to his (owners) mental health. Dog is two years old, nervous and sounds like she will need quite a lot of support to feel comfortable with us. But I have some experience of that. Fingers crossed it all works out. So no money going to bad puppy farmers (well, not my money - pretty sure she came from a puppy farm in Liverpool to the current owner originally).

So excited to collect her (it feels like Christmas Eve crossed with first date fear).

How's it going @PersonaNonGarter?

Aw thanks for checking!

New dog was wild! First 24hours she was wired to the moon and it was chaos. Totally insane, but within 10 days it was apparent that we had won the Rescue Dog Lottery. She is an angel. So gentle and loving and sweet and exceptionally clever. Clean, good with other dogs etc.

It took her a long time to sit in the same room as us (she liked to sit on the landing and was very deferential). But her confidence is growing and she will sit with us and even sometimes will go up to new people for attention. New people are still pretty scary though and she often hides upstairs if there are visitors.

No responsible rescue would have let us have her - but she is perfect for us. Good with the cat, children and no need for a 6ft fence Grin

That's lovely to hear. I'm glad things are going well!

@PersonaNonGarter

Yes, there are livestock. Not close but we’re in the countryside.

A dog would cause way more chaos walking out an open front door in the city than a dog walking out of mine.

We are responsible owners with experience, space, time and love. If we aren’t appropriate dog owners for a rescue dog, then of course we will get a puppy. It does seem ridiculous though.

I live in the countryside. I am the only one in the area with a 6ft wire fence. I have dogs and cats. There is too much wildlife about. I've had deer in the field many a time staring at my dogs. You can get a 6ft wire fence similar to deer wire you cant notice it and still have your views.

Oh that's a lovely update OP :) Congratulations.

I'm also finding it a struggle to adopt a dog OR buy a puppy from a breeder. Have signed up for the big charities and as we have never owned a dog before it's unlikely we will be chosen. I have expressed interest with several reputable breeders (got their info from the breed specific sites) but no one replies :( We wanted to get a dog/puppy next year though so perhaps that's why.
