Any tip tips after a disaster of a day??! So many puddles inside.

Pup is 11 weeks. Not using puppy pads as she kept trying to eat them.

Take her outside, wait quietly for 10 mins.
If she wees then praise and have a short play
If she doesn’t, pick her up, take her back in and keep her off the ground, either carrying her or having her on your lap for another 10 minutes then repeat.
Once she’s weed you can probably allow yourself an hour of relaxation before you repeat the process!
Always take her out as soon as she wakes up

I remember these days, I feel your pain but it will get better! How often are you taking her outside? And are you using a proper cleaner that removes the smell from dog noses, not just usual floor cleaner/bleach?

I got some kind of spray to put outside that was supposed to encourage ours to go in a certain spot outside, treats when he went in the right place, ignore & clean up accidents - hard to know what worked and didn’t but it all properly 100% clicked at about 4 months I think.

If you’re on FB look at dog training advice and support. They have a great file.
You need to make sure pup is outside when they need to go. So after eating or drinking or sleeping or playing or every half an hour anyway. If they go then praise. I used a phrase so now I can ask my dog to go (eg if we are about to go in a shop!)
It’s bloody hard. I remember many wolfhound sized accidents. Shock

LadyCatStark · 24/05/2021 22:00

Take her out every hour or the minute she starts sniffing around or goes to the door. Over praise toileting outside like it’s the most exciting thing ever 😂 and give a treat.

hopeishere · 24/05/2021 22:07

She seems to sniff the floor all the time!! That's what's confusing me!

Pray the weather picks up as I'm currently freezing outside!!

Clean up any mishaps with a proper pet cleaner so no smell left which could (will) encourage re-offending!!
Ignore any accidents...
As hard as it is not to sigh loudly!!

Wolfiefan · 24/05/2021 22:12

You need an enzyme cleaner.
And a warm coat, head torch and wellies by the back door. Grin

OP in my experience when they're that small they wee:
When they're excited, when they're worried, half way through eating, just after a drinking, when they wake up, when they need a poo, when they meet someone, when they walk across the kitchen floor, when they walk from a hard floor to a carpeted floor...

We don't get an hour. We get maybe 10 minutes sometimes.
It is getting longer!
We ignore the inside wees and do MASSES of enthusiasm for outside wees. (I'm sure my neighbours think I'm mad)

We have a special vanish urine remover.

poshme · 24/05/2021 22:15

And yes, praying for less rain.

AlwaysLatte · 24/05/2021 22:24

I took my puppy out for a wee every half hour at first - lots of praise. Then every hour. I also got up and took her out through the night every 2-3 hours. Just at first, to really get the housetraining going (we did get a few accidents but she hardly had time to do wees inside!)

AlwaysLatte · 24/05/2021 22:25

Oh yes I had little pieces of chicken that I gave her when she performed!

hopeishere · 25/05/2021 08:04

We have treats for going! Luckily we have a well lit garden so no head torch needed!

What sort of puppy do you have? Some are harder to housetrain than others and you may get specific breed advice if you go looking.

hopeishere · 25/05/2021 14:48

She's a cocker spaniel.

Treats aren’t a great idea. Clever pups work out that the more they pee the more treats they get!!

Enb76 · 26/05/2021 14:18

I have a 13 week old cocker. I can tell you what I have done, with two accidents since I got her.

Take her out every hour during the day. I ignore her entirely when outside until she's done a pee and while she's peeing will say 'go pee', and then make a fuss of her and take her in. I will then have about 40 minutes before I need to keep an eye on her in terms of needing another pee. At 13 weeks she now tells me when she needs to go - if she's very absorbed in a toy I will need to keep an eye on her at around the hour mark.
