Our dog has picked up a tick just above its eye.
I cant get it off with the tick remover, i had a few goes when he was calm but couldnt quite get the remover round ths tick and he is getting stressed now and snapping at me if i come near him with the tick remover. Its righ by his eye so i cant do it without him seeing.
The local vets arent open today so has anyone got any ideas?
Im so stressed as everythinh says remove the tick asap.

Our flea treatment (pill) is supposed to also kills ticks once they attach. Have you used that on your dog do you know?

MildredPuppy · 23/05/2021 15:13

He has a worming tablet and spot on - but the tick looks very red so i think its feeding

Sorry I have no idea , does your vets not have an out of hours number?

hippidyhiphip · 23/05/2021 15:16

Can you get a nexgard from anywhere? They usually drop off within a day after taking.

hippidyhiphip · 23/05/2021 15:18

Just checked. Think it's prescription only. The dog should really be taking a tick preventative regularly anyway.

MildredPuppy · 23/05/2021 15:23

They dont have an out of hours. We use the stuff the vet gave us so i think he is taking a preventative as we live in an area with lots of deer.
I think i will call a different vet in the town.

Soak cotton wool in gin (ideally surgical spirit) and apply that to the tick. Keep the gin away from his eye. It should release its grip after a few seconds so you can pull it out with tweezers. Or smother it in Vaseline. My spaniel is very prone to picking up ticks. Even with state of the art preventative measures he has had three in six weeks. This year is bad for them.

DO NOT do this.^^^

I personally would not go to out of hours vet with a tick.

Try to get someone to help you restrain your dog and try again to remove it.

Most Tick treatments take 24 hours before it has affect on the tick so you may find it is dead by the morning anyway. As it sounds as if you are using preventatives

hippidyhiphip · 23/05/2021 17:16

Yes if on a preventative it will more than likely be dead by the morning. Mine is on nexgard and although they still attach they die and fall off within a few hours.
I believed we were on preventative for ticks when she was a pup, but she kept getting them. Discovered we were on advantage which only did fleas not ticks.

BiteyShark · 23/05/2021 17:34

I would not be pulling a tick off from near the eye.

Mine gets lots all around there and this is why I use nexgard spectra because around 24-48 hours later they are dead and will easily come out.

Sitdowncupoftea · 24/05/2021 15:07

I would not mess about with the tick just go to vets as soon as possible. You need to start using tick treatment in future.

MildredPuppy · 24/05/2021 16:26

Just to update i managed to remove the tick when he was asleep last night.

Thanks to all for the tips. I am looking into the tick repeller
