Struggling to cope with whining

Gingersay · 15/05/2021 11:34

Our 10 month springer has a really high prey drive, and is constantly sitting at our windows/French doors whining and barking at birds, it is constant. I've tried every distraction tool I have, he gets at least 2 hours plus walking and access to garden all day, although I've had to bring him in to stop the barking. I don't know how to stop this I just want a quiet cup of tea.

Not had this problem myself so hopefully others will be along soon with their experiences. However, I've seen advice to use frosted window film on the lower half of the windows and French doors to help with this.

We have this with ours. We've now got window film on the bottom half of the door to block his view. It's a godsend. We then take it down for click the trigger training.

In the process of training our 6 month old springer not to chase birds. We basically go sit her amongst a flock of pigeons on the lead (her, not the pigeons....) and reward her for relaxed behaviour. ‘No Birdies’ is also a command she is rewarded for obeying on walks. In the meantime, window film sounds like a very good idea!

Should say, ours is crate trained so we can cover her crate...

Can I jump on here and ask those with bird chasing dogs. What would you do if you had a puppy who started to show a desire to start chasing birds at the park. Should I work on densensitisation earlier rather than later?

Block the windows with something. You can get film to put over them to stop them seeing out.

I'd recomend having a look at the facebook page Dog Training Advice and Support. We are using a principle called premack to help with bird chasing. It's in one of the units on the group

Thanks I will look that up

Window film has calmed our boy right down.

We started desensitisation with our pup as soon as she showed any inclination to chase anything living! So around 16 weeks maybe...
