Dogs staying in hotels

Any experiences of taking a dog to a hotel for a couple of nights?

I’m desperate to go away for a couple of days in the next few months (assuming I can find somewhere).

We’d have to take the (small, ancient) dog. Very well behaved.

He sleeps downstairs in his crate usually so I guess we would have to take the crate.

I’ve only been in his life for about 3 years & no dog experience to speak of before that. My partner has had loads of dogs but never taken one to a hotel. Any tips?

Choose your pet friendly hotel and then ring them up and ask what they require from you. I spoke to a lady this week in a B&B and she asked that the dog not be fed wet food in the room, not be allowed to sleep on the bed or the furniture and not to be left alone in the room at any time.
She also asked us to bring our dog's bed with us and they would provide a water dish.
They all have differing rules but it's just a question of behaving decently really

We've done this a few times... sometimes on purpose and a couple of times unexpectedly (we broke down when driving to Scotland for our wedding!!) and each time the places we have stayed have been dog friendly, and so very accommodating so long as you are respectful of their rules. I would bring a dog towel to clean post-walk paws with, and we bring our own dog bed too. Otherwise, enjoy yourselves! Mini breaks are so much lovelier with our pups 🥰

I stayed in an Ibis hotel with my dog. They asked for him to be kept off the bed and to tell them straight away if he'd had any accidents.
I took his bed, usual feeding bowls, some toys and carpet cleaner just in case.
Never had to leave him in room alone as there was a seperate breakfast area where dogs were welcomed.

Just have a chat to the hotel as pp suggest. I've done one night in a hotel with one well-mannered dog. The rules were no dogs on the bed and dogs not be left in rooms unsupervised. She had a great time as the bar staff have me a doggy bag of my dinner leftovers so she got them with her breakfast.

The place I chose had a paddock out at the back for dog exercise, which was handy.

We stayed in a chalet, the dog cried in her crate. Husband slept on the sofa bed with dog .

Got back home happy in her crate. Clearly our dog doesn't do change!

@Randommess

Oh no, that's a shame! We've done a week in holiday cottage with him and he was fine - apart from one massive accident on the first night!

Thanks everyone I feel really encouraged by your replies.

We have taken our dog to some very nice hotels! She’s not much of a barker so I guess in that respect easy because she’d never make much noise. It’s always been a great experience. Sadly she’s elderly and incontinent now so we can’t do it anymore. Sad

Hellcatspangle · 13/05/2021 20:07

Yes we have, had no problems at all. As long as the hotel is dog friendly and you take their own bed it should be fine...I wouldn't leave dog in the room alone tho.

rosesarered321 · 13/05/2021 20:11

We go to country house type hotels and establish that we can leave the dog alone in the room. Our dog is old and likes a nap in the room while we use the spa, we bring her own bed and she doesnt bark or chew at all.

haggisaggis · 13/05/2021 20:12

Taken ours to hotels a couple of times. As long as the hotel knows and it is a pet friendly place it should be fine. We had to pay a pet supplement and one hotel provided treats and a blanket. Ours just sleeps on the floor - won’t sleep in a basket. Only thing is he hated the lift and revolving doors were interesting!

Quickchangeartiste · 13/05/2021 20:22

Done this many times with my 2. Most hotels are accommodating. I bring blankets, food etc.
I generally have left them in the room to go for breakfast or dinner and either put the do not disturb notice on the door, or a note warning staff that they are there.
I find it helps to walk them and feed them in the room before settling down, as that seems to tell them that all is well - but they are labs so chilled as long as their tums are full.

My greyhounds visited many hotels it was quite amusing with some reception staff who thought it was small dogs only but actually just states 2 pets. You couldn't leave them unattended & pay an extra fee for cleaning so not sure why size would matter, luckily greyhounds aren't barkers and default to chilling, certainly less trouble and messy than many of their human guests.
Some places wouldn't allow you to take dogs into general areas like foyer seats, bar/restaurant which wasn't a problem as we'd eat out. You can end up with a longer trek to get outside with stairs/lifts to navigate so better to plan and not to rely on dog asking to go out.

Also stayed at a B&B which was ok although more stressful as they didn't keep cats separate like they'd told us on booking they would so felt like a guantlet every time we took short trip outside, but we could leave dogs in room to eat breakfast.
I much prefer self catering cottage or lodge with dogs if more than a night as usually more like home set up with kitchen and can try pick what things are important to you like an enclosed garden.

We've done this with our dogs lots of times. If it's a dog friendly hotel then they are usually very accommodating.
