New dog owner - clothing recommendations please

I have a new rescue dog who I love with a fierceness I thought I'd only feel for my children! We walk twice a day plus a late night wee walk for five mins. We're out in all weathers & seasons, on country tracks & pavements...and muddy fields. What clothing would you recommend for me? And footwear too. I'm a budget so either want things that are good value or are a good investment & will last. My coat in particular makes me really hot & doesn't keep me dry when it rains!

Thanks (and reading the advice on these threads has been SO helpful)!

Acai is a great find too - thanks!

I live rural. A good pair of water proof hiking books with ankle support. Wellies are no good for walking miles in over uneven farm fields. Also a 3/4 length waterproof wax jacket. I have waterproof trousers and hat and gloves for wet weather. I couldn't care what I look like as long as I'm dry and warm. I'm out twice a day all weathers. I have two large dogs.

Any good suggestions for hats?
I'm not keen on hoods....

Ooh yes, following hopefully for hat suggestions. Preferably one that doesn't make me look like Vera Stanhope.

It's overcast with occasional light drizzle here.

Tried a new harness on ddog as soon as it was off she ran off and went to bed, clearly she has zero intention of going out in this!!! Beginning to thank her princess nature.

I often just wear a woolly hat which I find fine for drizzle obviously not in hard extended rain.

Piglet92 · 15/05/2021 09:55

Clothing wise a cheap wax jacket £25 can't be beaten for warmth and waterproof but don't cheap out on footwear, Aigle neoprene wellies and ariat walking boots are my go to and we walk several miles a day.

RandomMess · 15/05/2021 10:11

I'm concerned a wax jacket will be too warm Sad

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 15/05/2021 10:34

Waxed hats with brims are good if you have glasses - help keep the rain off.

AppleBlossomTimeNow · 15/05/2021 10:42

Do waxed jackets smell? My dad had a jacket he used to treat with linseed oil that looked like a waxed jacket and it reeked!

They don't have to!

I generally look awful in most hats, but bakerboy styles seem to suit me. I have a waterproof one for rainy walks. A bit like this.. The peak keeps rain off your face and it fits under the hood of my raincoat as well.

I always get really hot on walks, even in cold weather. By chance I picked up a Lazy Jacks cotton lined long raincoat in TK Maxx about five years ago and it has been brilliant. It always seems to keep me at the right temperature. I can wear it in spring/early summer, but it works equally well in in snow and ice, despite not being thick or having a padded lining. It has a generous, removable hood, which actually stays up and also two large, zipped pockets, which are really useful for all the dog walking paraphernalia I take with me, plus one in the chest lining for my phone. Wipes clean too and still looks as good as new. They’re not super cheap, but you can usually pick them up for a good price in their online sales.

@MissyB1

Can I ask a question about the Aigle boots to those who have them please? Are they comfortable on your ankle bones? I have ordinary wellies at the moment and they always seem to rub my ankles.

Op definitely get some waterproof trousers, I'm about to don mine now for a rainy dog walk.

They are very comfortable on the ankle bones... I have always found wellies to be horrendously uncomfortable... spent what I thought was an enormous amount of money for wellies on a pair of Aigles...and I think they are amazing... I’ve walked miles in them and done agility classes in them. It sounds odd to get so excited about wellies but they made such a difference to do dog walking for me!

Wellies from Asda £10.

Cracked and got a Jack Murphy heritage raincoat that goes to my mid calf, game changer!!

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 16/05/2021 00:02

We tend to do street walks and generally in fair weather (mine hate going out in the rain!) but I have a gortex coat which is wind and waterproof with a hood in the collar, and a detachable fleece which I wear in the winter (with woolly hat and gloves). Pockets are well stocked with poo bags, hand gel etc. Also have a bum bag stocked with poo bags etc in so in the rare event it’s too hot for my coat I can sling that on instead

I just wear trainers usually unless we’re going to the woods then I wear my walking boots

I thought my coat was a bit expensive when I bought it but considering it’s been worn almost daily for 7 years it’s been a fantastic investment !

minniemomo · 16/05/2021 00:04

Look at how rainproof the jacket is - mine is from mountain warehouse and is 10,000, that is good! It's 3 in 1 so all seasons. Buy waterproof trousers too and boots / shoes with vortex. Hiking shops are your best bet

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 16/05/2021 00:15

Every couple of years I buy a new pair of ankle Wellies from Aldi - great for dog walking and so comfy and easy to pull on and off. Here's my latest pair :-) My coat ends up muddy as either my or others' dogs tend to jump up at me. I've been wearing a black man's Primark coat I found in a charity shop about 6 years ago. It's my dog walking coat only - it's going very strong still!

Ps my dog walking pal bought herself the exact same pair! We look a right pair of bobby dazzlers!

albird · 16/05/2021 09:36

Another Aigle wellie fan - I walk every day in them in the winter and they've lasted 7 years so far and are really comfy. Also I swear by my waterproof sealskin gloves.

midnightstar66 · 16/05/2021 09:45

I've just bought a pair of Ariat boots as the long neoprene wellies are rather warm for a wet summer day. They are marketed as riding trainers (handy as I do occasionally ride) but look like fairly stylish hiking boots. They are the comfiest things I've ever walked in right from day one which was a long hill walk without even a hint of soreness. Agree neoprene lined wellies - le chameau are ridiculously comfy too for winter or a quality pair of leather country boots. I spend a huge amount of time in the mud and cold so I do have a fair selection.

aiwblam · 16/05/2021 09:48

I have a sea salt waterproof coat and Saloman walking shoes and a pair of Saloman walking boots. They are very protective for your ankles.

aiwblam · 16/05/2021 09:50

In really manky weather my dog wears this www.freckles-designs.com/collections/waterproof-coats/products/brora-waterproof-dog-coat

TheRedHat · 16/05/2021 15:12

I wear those neoprene lined Aigles. I bought a pair what feels like 10 years ago now - have never needed another! I have dodgy ankles and they are fine but I would size up if you have difficult feet. The support around the heel is brilliant. I can't walk in hiking boots but can walk in those.

I hate waterproof trousers though I do keep trying them - I walk in fleece lined leggings even in the rain. The best pair I got were off Amazon for about £12!

I bought a specific coat for walking the dog with loads of pockets - it's a lined waterproof coat and I use it all year round in the rain (also because mine still jumps up a bit and I wanted a coat I didn't mind getting muddy!). Then I have a gilet, again with loads of zipped pockets, and wear that in other weather.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 16/05/2021 15:42

Just looking at changing my Dubarry boots for an alternative as they are my second pair which have leaked! Anyone have experience with alternative brands which are less likely to leak? Looking at Le Chameau or Ariat country boots. Thanks

Helenluvsrob · 16/05/2021 15:47

My top tip - loads of old trousers for “ normal “ walks. Any time off lead any you’ll get muddy or dusty 😂

Helenluvsrob · 16/05/2021 15:48

Grubbs frostline wellies here and hoka goretex walking boots

AppleBlossomTimeNow · 16/05/2021 15:49

@TheRedHat - where's your coat from? Sounds fab!
