Bringing home a pup in a few weeks, and the breeder suggested we book vaccinations in as the slots are filling up so quickly at the moment (his husband is a vet so I assume there’s a bit of insider knowledge there hah)!

He explained they get the puppies vaccinated with nobivac, so I emailed a local vet who said they use DHP and Lepto 4.

The breeder then explained that she (the puppy!) will get DHP and Lepto 4. I’ve given this information to the vet but they haven’t replied yet!

What does this mean? What else will she need in terms of vaccinations? And how far apart is everything?

I’ve done some research and I can’t find a general consensus so I thought I’d ask here for advice and guidance (first time dog owner, although I’m sure you can tell!)

All depends on the vet.
11-12 weeks of age is the second vaccination some vets give three vaccinations so another 4 weeks on that
Then she won't be allowed out for another 2-3 weeks.

You have to keep them in at the age where socialisation is crucial. It makes no sense to me.

Relax and stop panicking. Getting a puppy is meant to be a happy time.

I’m very excited, just don’t want to do anything wrong!

Thank you for the advice! Smile

My understanding, having just been through this, is that with Lepto 4 they have to have 2nd and 3rd vaccinations at 10 and 12 weeks, so then don’t go on walks until 13 weeks. If they have lepto 2 with the breeder’s vet they can have everything else at 10 weeks . The most important thing is that they have the same Leto type at both.

Nobivac is the brand like Heniz.
DHP - distemper, hepatitis and parvovirus
L4- four strains of leptospirosis (wiel's disease).
Nobivac vaccinations can be started from 6 weeks of age, the puppy must be 10 weeks old before it can have it's second dose of either DHP or L4. There must be 4 weeks between the two doses of L4 and not less than 2 weeks between the two doses of DHP.
Example schedule
6 weeks old puppy gets 1st DHPL4, then has second DHPL4 at 10 weeks.
8 weeks old puppy gets 1st DHPL4, then at 10weeks gets 2nd DHP and at 12 weeks gets 2nd L4.
Nobivac and Canigen are the same vaccine made in the same factory with different labels put on.

All vets practices are very busy current, it is probably easier to phone and book the second vaccination appointment or use an online booking system if they have one.

As above re the difference between the two Lepto versions and you need to continue with the one your pup is given by breeders, otherwise you have to start again.

With regards when you can take puppy out, have a chat with your vet. With my puppy, she had Lepto 4 but I was told I could take her out at around 12 weeks but had to keep her away from stagnant water and places the Lepto is most prevalent until she'd completed the Lepto course.
Whatever you do though, don't listen to anybody who says Lepto isn't necessary and get the vaccines done! One of my pups littermates wasn't vaccinated and very sadly died of Lepto at around 7 months of age.
