Pancreas new problem.

So following on from the bout of pancreatitis our dog got the all clear to go back to her normal food. She had lost 3kg of weight and vet keen for her to regain asap.
But her poo was grey then became pale yellow and dry as sand. If left out for a few minutes the poo turns white. Reminiscent of 1970’s dog turds if anyone remembers what that was like.

Its been a couple of weeks with no improvement. Vet doing another fasting blood test tomorrow morning. Vet suspects EPI. Basically pancreas not making enough enzymes to digest the food.

Am told its treatable with supplements in powder form added to food.

Anyone got any success stories? Dog ownership is a damn sight harder than I had imagined

Did you move her onto raw food? White poo means too much bone content in the food (usually if raw fed) So cut down on bone content and it could be ok.

EPI is usually ok to treat, takes a bit of time to get the right mix of powder and food but doable.

@PollyRoulson no still on wet food. Three cans of Millie’s Wolfheart.

I emailed Millie’s but I don’t think they understand I was asking for advice. The response I got was thank you very much . I was like what ???

Oh gosh. At least the vet is on it & doing the necessary tests. I agree dog ownership is hard. Ours is a rescue & has had eye surgery, the pancreas issues - how many vet visits due to that. Our insurers also offer 10 minute vet consults so sometimes good for a second opinion.

My lovely old dog had EPI and did very well with enzymes on her food. She also developed diabetes which was an extra complication but did just fine. It was a bit expensive but she was worth it. It definitely is manageable.

I forgot to add ours was on barking heads before the pancreatitis diagnosis & I just think it was too rich for her. Maybe millies is the same?

PollyRoulson · 11/05/2021 21:40

hmm thats not helpful from Millies!

Oh ok then it could be a sympton of malabsorption and pancreatic issues.

I am no medic but EPI used to be treated with the enzyme and also Cobalamin (vitamin B12) injections.

Fingers crossed she feels better soon

How’s your dog @fortifiedwithtea? Any improvement?

fortifiedwithtea · 18/05/2021 12:33

@ImAncient thank you for asking. Yes we have had some improvement and reassuring blood test results.

Bloods took a long tome to come back from the lab vet rang yesterday. So now its seems there is no sign of the inflammation in her pancreas. Testing was done for EPI but she is making enzymes. Sand castle poo is down to having to change her diet during pancreatitis. Vet tells us a dogs digestion can take 6-8 to return to normal after a change in food. So we are to continue with Millie’s Wolfheart for the foreseeable.
