The vet will call when there is news right?

Our lovely dog is at the vets today, we think she may have eaten something and it has gotten stuck along the way. She has been 'off' for a few days now and last night when we were out for a walk she was flying along totally happy until she needed a poo then suddenly she was quiet and panting and just wanted to go home. She did poo and it looked normal but it was clear there was something wrong. Anyway we trundled off the to the vets this morning and they are going to xray her. I wasn't allowed in with her because of covid and it all felt very rushed so I didn't have time to ask questions. They said they would call when they had news and its been 4 hours now.

I'm supposed to be working but she is all I can think about. She really is the best girl and I am so worried. I just want to know how she is but I know they are really and don't want to be pestering them. She is such a nervous little thing and I know she will be wondering why I have left her. Is it bad etiquette to ring or should I just sit on my hands and trust that they will let me know when they do?

I would ring them, they won’t mind honestly. Just give them a call.
Hope she is feeling better soon x

Afaik they do all calls after 2.30.. At our vets anyway!

Floralnomad · 11/05/2021 14:42

I would ring . I also don’t see why all vets aren’t letting people in for a proper consultation, ours allows one person per pet and no sitting in the waiting room .

They still haven't done the x-ray. Apparently an emergency surgery came up and they will get to her when they can Sad. It has been the longest day.

Blimey your poor dog may end up being an emergency if they don’t get on with it . Is it a very small practice ?

She is home! They couldn't see anything on the xray but said that there was a build up of faecal matter so they think she has constipation. We have been sent home with a very drowsy dog and some lactulose. Fingers crossed that is all that it is.

Floralnomad, we are in the countryside and they also see livestock so although there is about 6 vets there at this time of year they are really busy with calves and lambs.

At least it doesn’t sound like anything serious , good luck when the lactulose works

Oh I can totally sympathise as our dog had the same, although we didn't know that he had eaten a bloody wooden kebab stick, he is totally fine now though so just wanted to send you positive vibes and give you the advice that our Vet at the time, who were shit, did an Xray but because it was wooden it didn't show up and they didn't investigate further! He/she will be fine, in the best place!!!

Not trying to worry you but we had this with our little dog.
The vet did an X-ray and couldn't find anything on it. But because I had been so insistent that there was something wrong he decided to operate.
When he opened him up he found that he had swallowed a piece of decorative bark from the garden, it had got stuck and caused an obstruction and his bowel was ready to rupture. But because it was wood it didn't show up on the X-ray.
It was touch and go for a few days as the vet said it was a close call but he recovered well.
That evening hubby and I cleared all the bark out of the garden.
Fingers crossed it is just constipation but please just watch him closely.
