Blind dog and kennels

Does anyone have a blind dog and still send them to kennels? My 8 year old dog has gradually been losing his sight for about 18-24 months and it has completely gone over the last few months. He gets around the house and garden absolutely fine and as long as his walks are the same each time he loves it. He hasn't been to boarding kennels since he has gone completely blind so I'm worried to send him. We would like to visit family soon but cannot take him with us. We have another dog and they will share the same run on the kennels, he's been there quite a few times before and they put both dogs in a quiter area. I'm worried about him being scared, I'm thinking about not going away (would e 3 nights) but wondered if anyone has any advice please?

Would a home boarder be another option than kennels?

No mine goes to a home boarder, he never really got on with kennels anyway.

Sounds scary for him. Suggest housesitter.

I had a dog who eventually lost his sight but managed perfectly well in kennels. They always put him in the same kennel and exercised him in the same outdoor area, so he knew his way around just as he did at home. Might be worth asking your kennels if he could go in for a day and see how he copes.

My dog lost his sight last year, we have two dogs and one of the tips I was given on a Facebook page for blind dogs was to put a little cat bell on my sighted dogs collar. It has worked brilliantly my blind boy follows the bell to know where his best friend is. I haven’t found a solution to boarding yet as he’s also diabetic now and no one wants to care for him.

I use a house sitter, would that work?

Mine is diabetic too - lots of homeboarders here are prepared to look after and have knowledge of diabetes. Holidays 4 Dogs were really helpful.

I would go for a home boarder or dog sitter in your situation, to be honest. I think it's much kinder to keep him in his own environment.
