Harness recommendation for dog who hates harnesses

BarelyFunctioning · 07/05/2021 12:34

I have a middle aged terrier who objected vociferously to harnesses when he was a pup, so we gave in and just used a collar and lead. (We really did try all the sensitisation tricks to get him to like the harness but he's a stubborn lad, and just said no Hmm.)

However, am yearning for something kinder and wondering if harness technology might have moved on since he was a pup.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good harnesses? I've looked online and there is so much choice.

Something comfortable for him but also gives good control (he's quite strong) would be great.

We have this one: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Doodlebone-Dog-Harness-Snappy-EASY-FIT-AirMesh-Padded-Vest-6-Sizes-10-Colours-/283440948090?var=0&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338268676&toolid=10044&customid=Cj0KCQjwytOEBhD5ARIsANnRjVgokawLMU72JnoCRbcZ8tEqz0NbXnqcHai5V1YgPG3SY06U85Sc6ecaAst5EALw_wcB. (the Dooflrbone harness). It's extremely easy to put on and our pup doesn't mind it at all, but we have a toy breed, so he's not strong. Not sure if they would work for stronger dogs

I have indi dog Houdini’s for our terrier , they are made to measure so a good fit but also wear and wash well , not overly expensive either .

Thanks all will look at those. Yes he's definitely quite strong. I won't let my septuagenarian mum for instance walk him in case he pulls her over. (He can be absolute fine and walks to heel, but if he sees something of interest e.g. a cat, he'll try and get to it hell or high water.)

I remember an MNer recommended something called Perfect harness or something, does that ring a bell, and is it as perfect as it sounds?

Just had a look at this. It's good that it doesn't go over the dog's head. I think that's what my dog objected to, in retrospect.

Perfect fit are great. Good things are that you can clip if around the neck and not have to pull it over the dogs head. This may help if your dog was not happy having the harness pulled over his head.

It does have clips that make a noise when closed so make sure he is desensitised to this as well as the actual harness when you are getting him used to it. If he has a clip collar he will be find with the name.

I will find a video to help you get him used to the harness you will need to take it very slowly to get him happy with it

Thanks @PollyRoulson a video would be great!

Yes, his collar has a clip that makes a noise, so he should hopefully be okay with that.

Perfect Fit for our large dog here, and a Ruffwear 3 clip harness for the escapee smaller dog.

If it's the putting it over the head be objects to, the Perfect Fit is a good one as you can put it on and clip the neck section like a collar, then put the body on.

BarelyFunctioning · 07/05/2021 13:46

Thanks @SoddingWeddings that's useful to hear. And yes, he is definitely 'head shy' (doesn't like it when people reach over his head, he sort of ducks out of the way.)
