How long in vets after neutering

Our dog is being neutered next week and I wondered how long is typical to stay at the vet post procedure? Also how long is the recovery at home?

Usually you’ll get a call early afternoon and given a time to collect, usually keep him calm for a week and on lead, though some are quick healers and raring to go 😀

Mine went in at 9am and I picked him up a around 1pm. He slept all day, had a 20 minute walk the following day, and after that he was raring to go and hated being stuck on lead walks for 10 days Grin

Our ddog was in first thing in the morning and we got him back late afternoon. Not sure what time he got his op.

First day/night back was heartbreaking as he just whined constantly coming fully out of the GA. Then it was 10 days with a cone and on lead walks only. We also blocked the sofa for the first few days to avoid him jumping on and off.

We tried a comfy cone, but he managed to catch that and chew it to pieces one night so went back to the usual plastic cone which was more effective.

We took the cone off in the house when we were supervising him closely and on walks and he never went near his stiches, but we would put it on if we were leaving the room/house and at night.

Oh this thread has got me thinking. Does anyone know for bitches what the day of the op is like? Are they normally out in a day? Or stay in overnight? Really hoping it’s not overnight stay

Brought my dog at 10 am,collected around 4pm.A bit groggy for the rest of the day but back to normal afterwards.

@Turquoisesol,similar as male dogs,if all is well.I was worried as well but she did not require more time than my male dog, scar was almost invisible.

Forestdweller11 · 07/05/2021 11:22

Went in at 9 picked him up at 2. With a bag of pain killers and special food and cone. He was a bit wobbly, but by about 6pm was back to normal. We had to block off his favourite perches for a couple of days so he didn't jump up. That was the worst bit as he didn't realise he should be taking it easy. After about 4 days we gave up trying. Didnt need to use the cone. Never bothered his stitches. He did fuss a bit on his leg where'd they shaved him. Turned his nose up at the special food and I gave him pain killers that night and the following day (although not sure he needed them). But in reality his recuperation time was very short, less than 24hrs .

Thank you 3JsMa. Was that normal op or keyhole?

Missfelipe · 07/05/2021 11:37

Our girl went in first thing and we picked her up in the afternoon. In and out the same day. She was a bit groggy and nauseous from the anaesthesia so just kept an eye on her that evening.

@Turquoisesol
Traditional, open surgery.I was so sad for her as it's totally different then male nutering,I've stood next to the vet when my male cat was nutered and it's such a tiny incision, the testicles just pop out and it's done in 20 minutes max.
Females one is more complicated and invasive but they don't seem to mindGrin.

Turquoisesol · 07/05/2021 13:47

Yes it’s a bit of a thought for them isn’t it

Quickchangeartiste · 11/05/2021 21:02

My bitch had keyhole. Went in around 8.30 and we picked her up at 3 ish. Our vet kept her until she woke up and had a wee.
She was very sleepy afterwards and a bit sorry for herself. But you would never find a mark on her now and she was keen to get moving next day.
And she looked so cute in her blue bodysuit😍

Big Dog was utterly miserable in the Cone of Shame but tolerated an inflatable ring collar well. DD's little dog had a onesie to stop her nibbling the stitches and that worked well.

First day/night back was heartbreaking as he just whined constantly coming fully out of the GA.

The vet told me the long-acting painkiller makes them very disoriented and that's why they're so unsettled.

They'll recommend a light meal afterwards so have it ready - a tablespoon of uncooked rice in a pan with a few chicken portions on top, add some water and boil for 20 minutes, cool and remove the bones if there are any. Also, think about how you're going to get the painkillers into them - I recommend Aldi's low fat Brussels paté, about 47p for a tub so gods know which bits of pig are in it but every dog I've ever known thinks it's delicious. It's easy to hide a squirt of Metacam in a teaspoonful of it.

Thanks for all the advise. He’s 2 days post procedure now and no happy with the cone at all and can’t stop bumping in to things! He had diarrhoea last night quite a few times but eating and drinking well so think he is fine
