Bought by Many or Petplan??

These are the 2 most well known companies I hear recommended. Which do you have and what level of cover?

I'm thinking of going straight to lifetime cover just incase she gets a condition? Or is it better to start with a cheaper basic plan?

Thanks

Get lifetime cover so that if you claim you will still be covered in subsequent years for the same issue.

I'm with Bought by Many for my cats

I'm with Boughbymany £15,000 per year lifetime cover.

But previously I had Petplan £4000 cover and they paid out £4000 for my dog's surgery.

@XelaM so you've had both... which have you found best to deal with?

Get the best cover you can and make sure it's a lifetime policy so that it covers ongoing conditions for life.

I'm with PetPlan and have been for the last 20 years. It does seem to be quite expensive now and if I was insuring a new dog I would go with Bought by Many.

To be honest (touch wood) I haven't yet had to deal with Boughtbymany, so can't really say. I went with them this time as they were cheaper.

But Petplan were a pleasure to deal with. Excellent customer service and paid out directly to the vets without any questions for me.

I was recommended to Pet Plan but they wouldn't insure my three year old dog because she was a rescue who had had a hysterectomy because of an unsustainable pregnancy. They also mentioned that she was mixed breed.

We are with Bought by Many and have had one claim. They were very helpful and paid up immediately.

Petplan have never failed me,so i stick with them.

Petplan are excellent. I’ve used them for years with both (3) cats and (4) dogs. As our cats all lived til they were 18 and two Labradors til they were 14+ , with our current dogs at 14+ and 15+ , I think you can imagine we’ve been somewhat ‘heavy’ users of the insurance plans Wink. Neve had a problem with paying out, and as they are so big and well known, some of the vet bills that have been over GBP500.00, our surgery were happy to claim direct so we were not out of pocket at any time (though they’re quick to pay anyway). They have made a couple of mistakes over the years but key is they have excellent customer service and so any errors were sorted out quickly and efficiently and I got paid compensation for the inconvenience. Can’t remember what policy I had in the past, but, one dog is on lifetime cover and the other is on a limited (by time or amount, whichever comes first) cover because she was too old for lifetime cover when we got her from rescue. I totally recommend them, they’re not the cheapest but they are utterly reliable ime.

Ooo tough one. I have petplan and they have paid out many many times with no issues but having seen the reviews BBM seem to be just as good.

Monkeytapper · 30/04/2021 19:34

We have had a good experience with Bought by many, paid out a £4.5k vets bill when puppy fell down stairs and broke her elbow, paid vets directly. Was dreading the renewal this year but they only h increase it by £3 per month which I though was fair.
Very easy to make a claim, all done on via their website, just uploaded vets bills and details and that was it. Highly recommend.

Squaddielife · 30/04/2021 20:46

I'm with bought by many for my new pup. Went for the complete plan which gives 15k cover per year. I have a referral code you can use to get a £20 amazon voucher when taking out a policy. Pm me if you want to use it (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links on here and didn't want to break the rules).

@Buddywoo that seems so bizarre they told you that and is definitely not their policy. A hysterectomy in dogs is a spay and most dogs are spayed and many are crossbreeds. Two of my dogs are also spayed, rescue, x breeds and are insured by pet plan.

I highly recommend Petplan as vets are usually happy to do direct claims with them so you don’t have to find a large amount of money upfront first. They pay quickly, their claims are now online so just requires you giving the vet your policy number and signature and they do it all for you. They text updates and pay really quickly. I’ve had dogs insured with others in the past such as More than who doubled the fees once my dog was 8! Whereas Petplan only increased by a few £ a year.

Gone with petplan and got 20% off for first year worked out cheaper than bought by many and also included loss/theft cover.
