Dog bit my dog

Prepared to be flamed as 2 sides to each story.
Putting bins out didn't know my dog had followed me.
Noticed she was stood at the top of the steps.
Before I could do anything a couple walked past with their dog.
My dog woofed but stayed on the step.
This other dog lunged at my dog , nearly pulling the owner over and attacked her.
So my dog snapped back. They ended up in the street snarling at each other.
I stupidly pulled them apart.
Checked other dog no marks but my dog has a chunk bitten out of her ear.
It doesn't need a vet trip, cleaned it up.
Apologised to owners and told them any problems I live here kind of thing. Don't know what I want to get out of this.
Same breed of dog that attacked her 2 weeks ago that's left me with 2 broken fingers and ligament damage.
Both bitches .
It's really shook me up

Your dog barked but didn’t move off your step? They didn’t have full control over their dog if it lunged and was able to attack your dog. I’m not sure why you apologised and said to them about you living there if any problems, it doesn’t sound like your dog moved.
I’m not surprised you are shaken up if this is the second time, I hope you feel better soon Flowers

Wolfiefan · 26/04/2021 16:55

You need to prevent your dog getting out of the house off a lead and so not under control. We have a stair gate in the hall.
TBH I’m pretty sure a chunk out of an ear would be a vet visit.

Delatron · 26/04/2021 16:55

I’m not sure I would apologise if another dog bit a chunk out of my dog’s ear.. Your dog wasn’t doing anything wrong and was attacked by another dog. Unless I’m missing something? What did they say?

drinkingwineoutofamug · 26/04/2021 17:08

Will try and answer each
@Youdontknowwhatyoureonabout my dog was on the step, yes it woofed as she does at anyone going past the house. I don't know why I apologised either . I even checked their dog over first until I saw I had blood on me

@Wolfiefan she snuck out, I normally close the door but as I was going out I was careless and preoccupied.
Ear pic attached

@Delatron they didn't say anything really. Asked if she was ok , me with bloody hands ....

Hopefully pic attached. The white powder is antibacterial stuff as she wouldn't let me touch it.
She keeps trembling so I've let her on the sofa.

The offending breed is Labrador. Had 2 now go for her in 3 weeks.
1st time she was sniffing in the opposite direction, owner with lab walked past and it went for her. She of course snapped back , lead wrapped round my hand breaking finger and aggravated a previous ligament damage.
And now this lab .
I thought labs were meant to be gentle dogs 🤷🏻‍♀️

Wolfiefan · 26/04/2021 17:33

Oh that looks sore. I think I would see if vet could prescribe pain relief. Might need antibiotics.
You do need to make sure your dog can’t sneak out though. If the other dog had been injured and the owners claimed you dog started it then you may have been in trouble. Plus there’s always (my worst fear) the risk they would end up under a car. That’s why we have the gate. Just to be safe. I do hope she’s ok.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 26/04/2021 17:43

Thanks @Wolfiefan , I have a stash of doggie painkiller that I put in her food.
She keeps trembling so plenty of cuddles . The wound is now clean , she let me .
The other dog is well known.
It could of been a lot worse.
I was just very shaken by it. Lesson learnt.
Thank you for not making me feel worse than I already do

OP posts:
Delatron · 26/04/2021 17:46

Oh poor doggie. Labs can be a bit vicious (I have a fear aggressive one 😣) I too thought they were a soppy, calm breed. That’s why we got him.
He has a strong prey drive too.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 26/04/2021 17:55

The lab scared me more when it growled and snarled at me showing it's teeth.

Thought I was next.

My dog by then had run into the house , shaking her head. Looks like arterial blood splatter 😳 she's a medium sized dog as crossed with a whippet , the lab was bigger and fatter

Why the hell did I apologise?? Why the hell didn't I say something??

I'm angry now as I know that dog is kept in the back garden and woofs most of the day to be let in.

I'm going to put it down to a nasty experience that could off been a lot worse - kids involved - and will close her in the house next time I put rubbish in the bin .

Please take your dog to the vet - she needs antibiotics for a bite like that.

Was thinking about ringing anyway in the morning. Husband came home and isn't impressed. Dog has taken herself off to bed My poor dog

Good, please do. You don't want infection to set in, dog bites can be really nasty things.

I hope your poor dog is okay Flowers

LeopardSheet · 26/04/2021 19:43

Like you say there’s two sides so I wouldn’t worry about assigning blame-it was a mistake on both sides and it could have been much worse.
Obviously their dog shouldn’t have been allowed to cause damage, but to be fair to them they were walking it along a road on a lead so we’re probably not expecting to encounter a loose dog so we’re probably caught off guard.
Your post isn’t too clear about whether the dog entered your property and attacked whilst your dog remained on the step the whole time (in which case totally their fault) , or whether your dog entered the street/left the property to engage in the fight which might make you more responsible as their dog was on a lead in public and yours wasn’t. Mistakes happen though.

Wolfiefan · 26/04/2021 20:05

You must feel shocked and upset enough OP. I am so sorry.
Hope it heals well.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 26/04/2021 21:04

Bit of both @LeopardSheet . My property then spilled over into street.
I feel horrible about it.
I've learnt a hard lesson that actually ended better than it could of done.
Can't believe I was stupid enough to get between 2 snarling dogs but I didn't fancy sticking my finger up her bum especially as that's how I got hurt last time.

OP posts:
LeopardSheet · 26/04/2021 21:27

The other owners probably feel awful too. It’s just an unfortunate incident/bad timing and dogs aren’t robots so these things (fights/escapes) will happen sometimes even to the best owners. It’s also only natural to act on instinct and get between the dogs. I wouldn’t worry too much-if anything it might be a good thing as there was only minor damage this time and it will probably mean that you are extra careful about the dog not getting out of the house in future which will only keep your dog extra safe. Likewise the other owners will hopefully learn from it too and be more careful with their dog around others in future.
Hope your dog recovers quickly and it doesn’t cause any reactivity issues around other dogs.

DiddlyWiddly · 27/04/2021 10:36

Personally, I don’t think you shouldn’t accept any blame whatsoever.
Your dog was on your property and didn’t leave.

I have a VERY hard time believing the other owners didn’t know their dog was aggressive and so to walk it in close range past a loose dog I think was really irresponsible.

My dog has never bit anyone but she isn’t great with other dogs so I am very careful to try and create as much as distance as possible.
NO way on earth would I walk her past a loose dog in someone’s garden, especially not at close range (it sounds like from the OP they were close?)

I don’t think think you should accept any blame at all but I do think a fence might be wise incase she sneaks out again

drinkingwineoutofamug · 27/04/2021 14:02

I now have a baby gate across my front door. That was fun getting it to a height she couldn't jump or get under.
She's ok today. Met up with some doggy friends but she didn't want to play much.
Phoned vets , 9am tomorrow earliest appointment. The ear looks fine. Clean and dry.
Thank you everyone for support .

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 27/04/2021 15:27

Clean and dry sounds good though. I’ve put the dog gate somewhere they can’t get a run up or recoil to leap over if that makes sense.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 28/04/2021 16:07

Went vets this morning. She had started to rub her ear last night.
She had a thorn in her ear! Bite is ok they weren't worried about that. So had a jab and got some ear drops - likes to shove her head down rabbit holes.
Rolled in shit so had to bath her twice and that knocked the scab off so blood everywhere again.
She still sinks like a pig farm 🤢
But she's happy and playing again

Oh bless her, hopefully she'll feel much better soon!

You can use ketchup to get rid of the poo smell, btw. Wet the dog, wash the offending area with ketchup, rinse, then shampoo as normal.

DiddlyWiddly · 28/04/2021 16:11

She has such a sweet, kind expression Smile

pilates · 28/04/2021 16:23

The other dog sounds dangerous to attack for such a minor incident. Hope your dog is ok.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 28/04/2021 16:36

2nd bath has worked. My house smelt of warm shit 🤢
My son came round to do some jobs for me , turned round and left .
So she's now over stimulated and running round like a lunatic.

I've not seen the other dog since the accident. Heard it barking in their back garden. Worries me though as 3 small kids in that house .

And I was happy to see her playing again with her friends and she was very polite towards a new dog that walks it's owner on the fields.

Didn't want it to knock her confidence with other dogs now she's calmed down herself to make friends - she was very in your face when I got her, but I taught her basic manners which she was badly missing.

Thank you again for kind messages, I honestly thought I was going to be told I was a bad owner etc etc
But tbh I've always had good advice and support of this doggie forum .
